This review is from: Give Me a Sign!: What Pictograms Tell Us Without Words (Hardcover)
Gives a bit of explanation and background for pictograms, but lacks detail. Many pictograms are included as examples but not explained. (Including the symbols from clothing tags which tell you how to wash the garment- I would have loved to have explanations for those!) When discussing symbols for mens' and womens' toilets, it says that while you could use the biological symbols for male and female, that requires people to know which is which, but then doesn't label the symbols.
