"This album wasn’t what it was intended to be at all," says Eric Clapton. "It’s actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let it happen. It’s an eclectic collection of songs that weren’t really on the map—and I like it so much because if it’s a ... Read more in Amazon's Eric Clapton Store

3.0 out of 5 stars Fans Have Most of This December 30, 2013
Format:Audio CD
If you are a collector of Clapton's recordings, you already have most of this. Even many of the bonus tracks have been released in previous Clapton compilations, as the liner notes indicate. The liner notes are very basic, telling us Clapton recorded in Miami, Jamaica and on tour. If you are madly in love with the image of a young, tan EC, then you're in luck, because just about every page of the book features a variation on that theme. EC strumming his guitar while staring wistfully at the ocean. It would have been nice to have pictures of the other participants, particularly the Tulsa musicians so integral to the sound of Clapton's records at this point. The late Carl Radle and the beautiful Yvonne Elliman were key players--more photo documentation of them and the band in the studio, on tour and "chilling" in their tropical habitats would have been nice. On the positive side, the music is terrific, great songs from a high-point in Eric Clapton's career, the sound mastered with real love and care for the man and his music. Buy it, if you don't have anything from this era (I can't imagine anyone not having one of the various reissues of "461 Ocean Boulevard"), or if you are a Clapton Completist. Otherwise, you already have most of this stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Give me more December 18, 2013
Format:Audio CD
5 cd's and 1 dvd of great music from an era when eric clapton was reestablishing himself back into the music arena.disc 1 is 461 ocean blvd. which was a triumphant comeback with the no.1 single i shot the sheriff.disc 2 is the underrated there's one in every crowd which is a bit laidback but extremely's 3 and 4 feature live slowhand in 1974 and 1975 ripping up the fretboard like it was still the 60's. disc 5 features freddie king who clapton idolized.the disc is blues guitar at it's best.the dvd is a new surround mix of 461 and quad mixes of 461 and there's one in every crowd.the sound of everything is great and the bonus material is mostly top notch.also comes with a 60 page cannot go wrong with this stellar now and enjoy.

This is a great collection of some of Clapton's great cuts. It's always great to hear him perform with some of the other greats and this CD provides us with four cuts where Freddie King appears and that alone is a real treat. The quality is excellent and, listening through my high end speakers as well as my Sennheiser headsets, I find nothing amiss. A previous reviewer gave this album a low rating STRICTLY BECAUSE IT WAS PRESSED IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC! That is absolutely asinine. He didn't listen to it, just gave it a low rating because, I guess, he doesn't like the Czechs! Some people should simply be banned from making reviews. I have been thoroughly enjoying both old favorites and new discoveries. If you are a Clapton fan, a Freddie King fan or a blues fan, this is a great addition to your collection. Meanwhile, unless you have some hang-ups about the Czech Republic, as some here appear to have, buy it now! (P.S. Much of this was produced in the US as well as two countries according to Clapton so be sure you have no hang-ups about other countries as well.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb remastered sound January 5, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have a number of SACDs, Japanese SHM-CDs and BlueSpec CDs, reissues by Audio Fidelity and Mobile Fidelity, and also remastered reissues by excellent boutique labels such as Raven Records. With those as references, I simply want to relate that the remixed and remastered version of "461 Ocean Boulevard" in this box set rivals or beats any remasters of any albums in all of those formats and reissues. The only CDs that I own that are comparable are some of the original DCC Gold CDs mastered by Steve Hoffman. Even on my decent but aging stereo system, from the punch of the bass to the vivid sonic presence of the drums (and, of course, the rhythm and lead guitars), it sounded like I was listening to a playback on studio monitors. For real! Frankly, I don't know of any redbook CD that has sounded this good and it just goes to show how far a talented engineer can take remastering, especially if they are allowed to remix from the original tapes (which are specifically documented and photographed in this box set) with only redbook specs. I know that remixing can be controversial but, to my ears, it's been done impeccably here. I am likely one of the few Clapton fans who has always enjoyed "There's One In Every Crowd" and that sound is also substantially improved here but not as much as with 461. Finally, "EC Was Here" sounds fine but, of the three, is the least improved, likely due to the fact that the tracks are from live concert recordings which, no matter how well done, were not as technically advanced as could be accomplished in a good recording studio environment. BTW, the packaging and hardbound book in which the DVD and CDs are contained is very high quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Changing Music December 28, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I was a college freshman when 461 came out in the summer of 1974. I was a struggling acoustic guitar player of two years having trouble connecting ,just jumping around from style to style trying to copy various artists. When I first heard 461 suddenly everything came together. This LP taught me how to play guitar. I could connect with the slower acoustic numbers....Give Me Strength,Please Be With Me and Let It Grow but the way Clapton and George Terry blended in the electrics I started to think of songs in terms of guitar parts and orchestration. Plus, the Dobro parts are just fantastic. Clapton is so under rated. When you think of the totallity of his musicianship, one of the great guitarists of all time, thats a given, but, the Dobro and slide playing, arranging, vocals, bandleader, writer, and on and on. Just the last track on disc one the instrumental rundown of Give Me Strength is nearly enough reason to buy this set.I know Ry Cooder,Duane Allman,Bonnie Raitt, etc. are considered at the top of the slide heap but is there a finer Dobro/slide track than this...ever?

This is one of the best box sets I've bought to date. I
highly recomend it and the book is great. Beautiful layout and pics. Nice props given to Carl Radle for his musicianship and putting the players together for the core of the band of these recordings. The music is warm and clear very well done all around.Lots of live and previously unreleased tracks.

I saw EC right after 461 came out with Todd Rundgren and The Band at the old Three Rivers Stadium in
Pittsburgh,PA July 5th...I think ;-) Great show, The Band was the best but Clapton was great especially the acoustic numbers with Yvonne Elliman.

Big $ for a handful of unreleased songs
What would have made this worth the purchase price would have been the inclusion of Clapton's film of the period "His Rolling Hotel" a 90 min look into the 78 tour he took in europe by train with Muddy Waters as opening act. An amazing film that captures the time with concert footage,... Read more

....I'm opting for the 2 CD set. Too much overlap from Crossroads II live collection on this one to make it worth it for me. The 2 CD set looks sweet though, now listed @ $26, even if I own both remastered discs that are featured in the set.
