4.0 out of 5 stars Rare Groove, December 8, 2006

Based In Los Angeles, the Sisters Love were originally Vermettya Royster (lead vocals), Jeanne Long, Lillie Fort, Gwen Berry and founding member Merry Clayton. Clayton is famous for her session work in the late 60's and 70s and even released some obscure records of her own. She left the group after a label change.

Peaking in the 1970's the group scored regional success with "Mr Fix it" and "Give me your love", a Curtis Mayfield gem. The latter was made popular again in the late 70's by DJ Danny Krivit that was a underground disco favorite. The eight minute jam will have you bouncing off the walls.

This is a essential release for any fan of 70's soul/funk. This group never released any full fledged albums but did some work with Motown/A&M Records. Their soaring vocals and harmonies over funky drums and bass lines would please anybody. Just play the remake of the Beatles "Blackbird" or "Now is the time". Other great cuts include "Im learning to trust my man" and "HA HA HA"......You will be in soul heaven!

5.0 out of 5 stars 70's female soul at it's best., March 19, 2009

Great CD.

This group was a relative unknown in the 70's but if you watched the Blackplotation movie "The Mack" starring Max Julian & Richard Pryor and remember the movie scene about the Player's Ball" that female group putting down the live funk singing "Now Is the Time" were The Sisters Love.

This is raw soul music at its best and the gospel inspired voices mixed with the funky soul music throughout this CD is a must have "rare to find" CD.

This one is a must have for any music collection.

I'm a big fan of the Soul Jazz label, especially of the great titles they have produced from Coxsone Dodd's Studio One masters.

The repertoire selection on this release is good, but the sound quality is generally not up to par. For some unknown reason, some of the tracks have been speeded up, while a couple of others (the Man-Child titles) are obviously dubbed from disc (and with no disclosure in the booklet). There's a lot of detail missing in the sound of the Motown tracks, which has been pointed out on a number of forums, including Soulful Detroit and Motown Treasures. Sources for those titles are obviously second generation copies.

Sadly, the essay has numerous errors in it, unusual for a label which normally produces impeccable work --- I guess they just dropped the ball on this one.

In conclusion, I would say that if you need to have the A&M tracks, this is the only way of getting them, but if you are into their Motown period, the Reel Music release "With Love" is the way to go.

For an honest assessment of the Reel Music album, I'd suggest that you check into the forums of both Soulful Detroit and Motown Treasures. Motown fans and collectors are serious people and are not afraid to speak their minds. I have found that reviews for "With Love" have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic.
