Editorial Reviews

This perennially popular San Francisco rocknroll legends career has been widely documented on CD, but his early 1960s sessions for King Records have never been anthologised in the CD era until now.

Recorded in 1960 and 1961, these 18 sides represent an important transitional period in Freemans career, as he successfully moved from Do You Wanna Dance rocker to Cmon And Swim soul man. King only released four singles on Bobby over a 5-year period including the hit (I Do The) Shimmy Shimmy plus one LP that duplicated many of the previously released sides (which means that many of our inclusions here have never seen the light of day before).

The recordings here are mostly in the New Breed R&B style and will appeal to both sets of Freeman fans. The sleeve notes offer Bobbys own recollections of this period in his career, and the wealth of previously unpublished colour photos from the King vaults will have fans of rock n roll photography drooling. A perfect complement to Aces earlier and still available collection of Bobbys Autumn recordings, Cmon And Swim.

Bobby Freeman was rockin out back in the 50's and 60's. His upbeat songs were Bay Area Hits but
if you listen to his slow stuff you are doubly impressed.

Interesting collection of blues & R & B from King Records of Cinncinnati....no hits here to match 1958's Do You Want To Dance , but Shimmy Shimmy was a Top 40 release in 1960. For collectors , an interesting collection from Syd Nathan's archives & King was one of the top post war indie labels with many great artists !
