Biography

Bobby Gillespie founded Primal Scream in 1982, before becoming the drummer for seminal alt-rock band The Jesus And Mary Chain. He performed on their acclaimed debut Psychocandy (1986), before leaving to focus on Primal Scream again. It took a number of line-up and style changes, and a handful of unsuccesful singles, before the band got into full stride. Debut album Sonic Flower Groove (1987) was… Read more in Amazon's Primal Scream Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Bobby Gillespie and band spend much of their third album drifting 'tween side two of Sticky Fingers (acoustic blooze like "Big Jet Plane," complete with Bobby Price-like horns) and the more celebratory hits of Sly & The Family Stone ("Funky Jam"). It could conceivably be a huge send-up, but they play it with a straight face and hence should be taken at least as seriously as Lenny Kravitz or the Black Crowes. --Jeff Bateman

4.0 out of 5 stars Is There A Law That Says You Can't Like Both Versions?, October 29, 2004
Apparently, there's an unwritten law that says you can't possibly like both versions of Primal Scream? Well, I beg to differ! I happen to dig both the groundbreaking psychedelic/electronica sounds of the "Screamadelica" and "Vanishing Point" discs as well as this far from innovative but still hugely enjoyable slice of retro-rock. Fans of 70s-style hard rock with generous doses of funk, soul and blues will like this CD alot. When it comes to music, variety IS the spice of life and diversity is more than welcome. Expand your horizons...just because it's different from the rest of their catalog doesn't automatically make it a failure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated..., April 16, 2005
Yes, I got into Primal Scream a little late (with this record). I know that some of their older fans look at this as a kind of sell-out. But I just don't see the problem. Screamadelica's a cool record. So is the brutal Xtrmntr. And the Stonesy, P-Funkish Give Out...The strongest tracks are the first two (Jailbird, Rocks), plus "Funky Jam", "Call on Me" and the terrific "Big Jet Plane"...Call me a fake fan. Call it what you want. This is a really fun album...

5.0 out of 5 stars I like this Primal Scream Better, January 15, 2001
By A Customer
It is apparently not cool to like this Primal Scream album best. I guess I'm not cool then. A review of their later CD, Vanishing Point calls this Rolling Stones meets Black Crowes awfulness. The reviewers tend to praise the later, loud, screaming electronic music. It's a matter of taste. This is one of my favorite CDs. I find the critically praised Primal Scream albums to be noisy and non-musical. If the band listens to what the papers say they will move further and further away from the sound of Screamadelica and this cd towards the louder fare. In my opinion that would be a shame.
