Suzy's Best,
By "gemini_j" (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Give Me Some Wheels (Audio CD)
GIVE ME SOME WHEELS is Suzy's overall most consistent album to date, which was overlooked yet again by country radio. WHEELS features some of Suzy's best uptempo songs ever, as well as some compelling ballads which she is just so good at. Suzy's voice is so fresh and clear and beautiful, its a shame country wont listen to her unique storytelling and voice. "Fall" is a declaration of taking the plunge to fall in love. "Traveling Light" is one of the catchiest songs here, a song about leaving, with an upbeat message about leaving the past behind and finding happiness. "No Way Out" is a quirky little ditty with hints of R&B in it. The ballad "Saying Goodbye To A Friend" is so tragically beautiful, sung with so much emotion and pain, it just resonates with you. The title track is another winner, very catchy. Overall WHEELS is a must have cd, and a reminder of what country used to be like in 1996, dont miss out on this.

Good-time album ideal for the road,

Suzy's inspiration for this particular album was Green light, an album recorded by Bonnie Raitt in 1982. Although the style of the music is very different - this is contemporary country - the mood of the album is similar, as both albums feature upbeat, good time, driving music. As far as I can tell, all the songs are originals. Given the Bonnie Raitt inspiration, we might have expected to find a John Hiatt song (Suzy recorded a couple of his songs for her earlier album, Voices in the wind) but there are none here.
Suzy sets the mood with the title track, which opens the album, a great up-tempo song. Not all the songs are up-tempo - some ballads are included - but most of the songs have an upbeat feel to them. One exception is Live to love another day, about getting over a broken relationship. Some songs (Let's get real, No way out) have titles that suggest sadness but are actually very upbeat songs. My favorite song here is She said he heard. This is about how people misunderstand each other, interpreting what is said in ways different from the speaker's intention. On one level, this is quite a sad song but it's so real that I find it, in a way, quite funny. Such a bright, cheerful album suggests that Suzy was happy with life at this stage of her career, but the album was not a commercial success. Nevertheless, if you're a fan of Suzy's music, you'll enjoy this album.

'Wheels' Another Winner,
By Chris S. "cscotts" (atlanta, ga United States) - See all my reviews

After the slightly detached affair that was her previous set SOMETHING UP ME SLEEVE ,Suzy Bogguss returned to form with this album, though it seemed as though no one took notice. It's a shame that it was so overlooked, because it contained some of her most endearing work, as well as some of her best, most expressive singing yet. Among the many highlights, the upbeat title track is another in a long line of uptempo winners that are Bogguss' trademark; other strong cuts include 'Feeling Bout You', 'No Way Out', 'Fall' and 'She Said, He Heard'. Unfortunately, this seemed to be the beginning of the end for Bogguss at country radio-- each of the singles released were completely, and unjustly, overlooked, propelling the project to nowhere fast.

Suzy is an AWESOME talent!,

I have just recently discovered the incredible talents of Suzy Bogguss!! Just last week I bought her CD, "Nobody Love, Nobody Get Hurt", which in my opinion is one of the best country projects I've ever heard! After listening to clips of "Give Me Some Wheels" on this website, I went out and bought it today, And again I am blown away!! I cannot believe that radio stations are overlooking Suzy's music. I intend to try and buy her complete library now that I have "discovered" her!! Cannot wait until she returns to Houston, TX, so I can catch her LIVE!! "Give Me Some Wheels" is great music by one of the most mesmerizing voices in country music!! You WILL enjoy it!

The other reviewers here have hit this on the head calling it "endearing", "charming", "true to form"!! I love this CD!! It is truly a compelling work. The best part about it are the ballads of which there are too few and Suzy is at her best with the ones that are here. THe most haunting is "Saying Goodbye to a Friend". Chills go through me hearing this one. Also exceptional is "Live to Love Another Day"...another killer song! Both of these could and should have been released as singles. Why was this work ignored by country radio??? Suzy is better than anyone out there! This is brilliant work!!

Underrated Album,

Suzy Bogguss has one of the nicest voices in country music, however in the past 5 years since this album release, country radio has separated itself from her music and refused to play it. All I have to say is they missed out on magical moments. Namely this cd. GIVE ME SOME WHEELS is an excellent album filled with well written songs, and excellent vocal delivery from Suzy. The title track is a great, upbeat, catchy song which sadly country didn't play. Same with the fun upbeat track "No Way Out". "She Said, He Heard" tells the story of miscommunication and distrust in a relationship. "Fall" is a beautiful song. Its a shame country refuses to play her music, she has a great voice, she's a great songwriter, its beyond me why they wont. This is an excellent CD, but after country didn't support it, it didnt have the "wheels" to succeed on its own, which is a shame.

JoDee Messina recently scored three straight #1s from "I'm Alright"--an album which, in sound and subject matter, is a direct descendant of Suzy's "Give Me Some Wheels" released two years earlier. Suzy did not fare nearly as well at radio or on the album charts. Nevertheless, anyone who appreciates JoDee's album will also enjoy "Wheels." Suzy's vocals are strong and tough, the musical arrangements rock, and the songs are characteristic of every album Suzy's ever recorded: melodic and lyrically smart. My only criticism of "Wheels" is that it lacks the eclecticism of Suzy's other work. Though each song is lyrically distinctive, under Scott Hendricks' production, several sound very much alike. Nevertheless, this album contains several of the best up-tempo pieces Suzy has ever recorded, including "No Way Out" and "Feelin' About You."
