Editorial Reviews

You can spend all the time and money in the world trying to craft the perfect pop-music scenario, but sometimes the stars have to align all by themselves. Even though early on the members of The Postal Service jokingly referred to "Such Great Heights" as "the hit" on their debut album, Give Up, there s no way anyone could have predicted the eventual impact made by a mail-order album designed in a pair of West Coast bedrooms.

To celebrate the 10 year anniversary, Sub Pop is reissuing The Postal Service s sole album, and including in the multidisc set 15 bonus tracks, including two brand new songs, "A Tattered Line of String" and "Turn Around. " On top of that, the band is back together: The Postal Service will hit the road in 2013 for a long-overdue victory lap, giving most fans their first (and last seriously, don t ask) chance to see the group in person.

Of course, the band s music was more than just electro-pop, and the force with which Jimmy and Ben captured the indie-rock zeitgeist of the early aughts made them more of a phenomenon than just a regular old band. That such artists as Ben Folds, Amanda Palmer, Streetlight Manifesto, and Confide have covered "Such Great Heights" is a testament to both the song s magical spark and its melodic inclusivity. The band s sound is such a touchstone that "Postal Service-esque" has become a generally accepted musical adjective. And it goes way beyond Owl City.

While it was impossible to anticipate how massive Give Up would become, it was obvious in 2003 that these guys had made something special. Ten years on it s amazing to know that so many people have come to agree.

The original had it's problems with sound quality and mastering, but it was still an amazing album.

There are lots of reviews that talk about how wonderful this album is, and how excellent the extra music on the second disc is, all of which is absolutely true. If you wonder whether the remastered version sounds significantly better, the answer is YES. The original CD sounds really bad - it's murky, the highs are rolled off, and there's essentially no low bass. All of these problems are successfully addressed on the remaster. There is even a significant amount of air during the intro to 'Sleeping In'. Bear in mind that this music was built from CD-Rs so it's never going to be state of the art, but I think this version squeezes out every available drop of sound quality. Kudos to Sub Pop!

This album, on vinyl, sounds nothing short of mind-blowingly amazing. I'm sure a lot of that is due to the re-master but this is an absolute joy to listen to on vinyl. I'm hearing all kinds of details that I never heard before. It's beautifully mastered and perfectly pressed. This is what vinyl is supposed to sound like. Thanks so much Postal Service and Sub Pop for doing this right. Buy the vinyl version; you get the mp3 download included for free (and they're nice high-res mp3s too).

Was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the presentation. The triple record is bound a very nice case. There are four different "page sleeve" things three of which hold records one holds an information booklet with photographs of Ben and Jimmy. Overall a great purchase with excellent value, I got mine for about $30 and was not expecting such quality after spending $40 on a comparatively modest double from Daft Punk (R.A.M.). Highly suggest this anniversary album by the Postal Service

the orginal is still great but the 2nd cd of remixs are a bit uninspired. It is worth getting if you don't have the original disk but not worth it just for the extra songs.

was first turned on to TPS after iron & wine's cover (cd 2) made the garden state soundtrack. even though not an original, that TPS song is arguably the strongest of a ridiculously strong soundtrack album. after that film and soundtrack i became both a zach braff and TPS junkie. i scoured the web for other braff musical suggestions and any TPS single that i could find. once my hope faded that TPS would produce more albums after give up, i relied on my own TPS compilation library to get my fix. this album could have been the future of music 10 years ago and remains a terrifically distinctive 21st century album well worth your hard-earned money. although i already owned every one of these 25 songs, i grabbed this after previewing it since the sound quality is notably better all-around. (note - i have never cared much about sound quality, so perhaps that last point is my self-rationalization for spending more money on MP3s that i already own.)

The Postal Service is without a doubt...amazing. This album is definitely timeless, and is quickly becoming a classic. Love him or hate him, Ben Gibbard has more talent than most musicians. This place is a prison evokes such emotion and raw sound that it gives you goosebumps. Such Great Heights gives you that sense that you're in a video game, and is of course the most popular song. My favorite of this album is probably "Nothing Better"... I've listened to it hundreds of times and it still hasn't gotten old for me. The mixture of Ben Gibbard and Jenny Lewis in the song provides great contrast. A must have for any music lover.

I was listening to this album on spotify long before I bought it, and I was surprised to learn that I am missing the first 30 seconds of, "Suddenly Everything Has Changed" from the second disc. This sort of disappoints me, since I really like the song and now I'm missing the first verse of the song. I don't know if this is an error on the part of the disc manufacturer or if it is supposed to be different on the CD.

Suddenly Everything Has Changed edited?
I just picked up the anniversary issue today (CD, not vinyl) and it's sadly the same thing for me. The way the song starts (immediately with the line "Suddenly everything as changed...") doesn't sound like a technical screw up, can't say for sure however. Annoying though!
