Editorial Reviews

Review
"Is the corporate playing field still an obstacle course for people who are “different?”  Freada Kapor Klein, one of America’s leading diversity advocates, thinks so. In Giving Notice, she and her coauthors tell you why  and what to do about it.  This refreshing and eye-opening new book blasts the ‘diversity industry’ and the ‘meritocracy myth-makers’ for ignoring the daily indignities and subtle biases that shape career prospects. Giving Notice tells it like it is and then tells it like it could be, offering every American a vision of workplaces that are good for people, companies, and the economy."
Rosabeth Moss Kanter, professor, Harvard Business School and best-selling author of Confidence: How Winning Streaks and Losing Streaks Begin and End

"This book will clearly set the new standard for the field.  I think it will be amazing and it should be required reading for anyone in the investment business."
David Blood, managing partner, Generation Investment Management and former CEO, Goldman Sachs Asset Management

"Freada Kapor Klein provides many insights into the microdynamics of diversity issues and even more insights into policy issues, organizational dynamics, and ways to change practice. She takes fundamental issues and articulates them in a very concise, engaging, and easy-to-digest way. Her examples are interesting, often humorous, and always clear."
Stephen Small, chair, African American Studies, University of California, Berkeley

Product Description
A groundbreaking book that offers approaches for changing the hidden biases in the workplace

This is an eye-opening examination of the causes and dynamics of bias in the workplace, offering a psychological, political, and societal analysis of the actual cost of bias to the bottom line. The authors make the hurdles that women and minorities face in the workplace as personal to the reader as they are to those who face them. Giving Notice is filled with sensible approaches for solving the current imbalance and challenges us to rethink unconscious ideas about stereotypes and commonly accepted business practices.

Freada Kapor Klein (San Francisco, CA) is an internationally noted consultant and diversity expert. She has been quoted in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and on the Today show, Nightline, and NBC Nightly News. Kimberly Allers (Bayshore, NY) was a writer at Fortune magazine and is a frequent guest speaker at professional development and women-oriented seminars. Martha Mendoza (Santa Cruz, CA) is a national writer for the Associated Press. She won a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Giving Notice: Why the Best and Brightest are Leaving the Workplace, December 17, 2007
In Giving Notice: Why the Best and the Brightest Leave the Workplace and HOW YOU CAN HELP THEM STAY, Dr. Kapor Klein provides insights into organizational dynamics based on both years of experience and rigorous research in the field. While the stories told and examples discussed in the book take place within the corporate setting, many of issues are present in parallel forms in other professional sectors and organizational settings as well. The book is engaging and bold. The composite portraits are very real and enable the reader to connect with the impact of bias and discrimination in very personal ways. The book targets the many forms in which discriminatory behavior and hidden obstacles are often built into our everyday practices. I also appreciated the useful steps and well-crafted new framework for inclusionary workplaces. This book is not just for HR professionals or diversity consultants. I would recommend this book for anyone who manages workplaces and/or leads organizations with a commitment to level the playing field so all have the opportunity to realize their fullest capacities.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CLEAR PATH TO UNDERSTANDING, April 2, 2008
This is a truly engaging, wise, hands on book. Whatever your business or organization, Giving Notice spells out with clarity and sophisticated understanding the positive approaches you can use to respond to the obvious and subtle ways people are marginalized, pushed to the side or harassed. It awakens the reader, shifts perspective to skillful practices and in a brilliant synthesis of research, case studies and deep experience shows how we can move from risk management to truly healthy workplaces and organizations. It's a great contribution!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Diversity Practioners and HR Professionals, November 26, 2007
By Michael Davis (Brooklyn, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Excellent book! If you are interested in diversity and inclusion issues in the working world then this book should be on your shelf. There are many books out there on the subject but this book is the first I have seen in a long time that is well written, full of great research data and laid out in a very easy to use and "personal" manner. Much of the research comes from The Level Playing Field Institute which has been a great resource for information and solutions re diversity and inclusion issues (in the workplace and in education) for many years.
