MJ Ryan has taught us that everything goes better with gratitude! In 1999, she wrote Attitudes of Gratitude, a popular, best-selling book that extols the benefits of living with a grateful heart. When we let ourselves feel and express our appreciation, we feel happier, younger, and healthier. Now Ryan has taken the essence of living a grateful life from the original book and paired it with beautiful and evocative images in Giving Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly, There is Much to Be Thankful For, November 27, 2007
This review is from: Giving Thanks: The Gifts of Gratitude (Hardcover)
"As far as I can tell, gratitude is generated in two ways--one, by a spontaneous upswelling of the heart toward the wonder of life and all its particulars, and two, by a conscious decision to practice looking at what's right in our lives rather than focusing on what's missing." - From the book

While some people think that having "more" will bring them fulfillment, everyday folks are waking up to a realization that spiritual masters have taught for eons: the quickest path to joy is an attitude of gratitude.

Author M.J. Ryan has a knack for recognizing the brilliantly gleaming facets amid ordinary circumstances--despite the challenges, fears and expectations that can encrust our hearts, damage relationships and threaten our well-being.

In the 127-page hardcover book Giving Thanks: The Gifts of Gratitude, inspirational quotes, compelling anecdotes and lush full-color photographs couple with Ms. Ryan's earthy yet piercing insights on cultivating a spirit of thankfulness and remedying the gaping "gimmies" that often underscore Western living.

From the green-eyed monster to taking things for granted, pondering our mortality to accessing fond memories, Giving Thanks reminds us of the myriad of ways we can live each moment to the fullest while still acknowledging that, at times, very crappy things happen (my words, not hers!)

Here are some of the superbly rich observations shared in this lovely book:

"One of the most incredible truths about gratitude is that it is impossible to feel both the positive emotion of thankfulness and a negative emotion such as anger or fear at the same time. Gratitude births only positive feelings--love, compassion, joy, and hope. As we focus on what we are thankful for, fear, anger, bitterness simply melts away, seemingly without effort."

"Gratitude makes us feel good because it helps us widen our frame of vision. Under depression or stress, we can develop tunnel vision, seeing only this problem, that difficulty. We can get overtaken by a heavy, dark feeling of despair. But when we experience a sense of gratitude, we give ourselves a dose of mental sunshine. Suddenly the world seems brighter, and we have more options."

"Ah, perfectionism! Those of us afflicted with the pesky bug may look with amazement (You mean you don't care if you didn't do it perfectly??) or disdain (What kind of lazy, good for nothing guy *are* you?) upon those who don't suffer from it, but the truth is, of course, that it springs from our own sense of lack. We simply don't believe we're good enough as we are in our humble, human, imperfect state, and must therefore compensate by being Miss Perfect Goody-Two-Shoes."

"While we can be thankful for past blessings and hope for future ones, when we experience a sense of gratefulness, we are usually contemplating some present circumstances. We are brought up to date with ourselves, so to speak. Our focus moves away from all that we or others did or failed to do in the past, or what we hope for or worry about in the future, and we find ourselves placed squarely in this precious moment, this experience that will never happen again."

Divided into three sections--The Gifts of Gratitude, the Grace of Gratitude and the Acts of Gratitude--Giving Thanks by M.J. Ryan is a wonderful book to use as a daily devotional or for contemplation, as well as stretching the boundaries of personal comfort zones. In addition, Giving Thanks would make a lovely holiday gift for just about anyone, including those who already practice the art of thankfulness.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful gift book with a strong message, October 4, 2007
By
This review is from: Giving Thanks: The Gifts of Gratitude (Hardcover)
"When we focus on abundance, our life feels abundant. When we focus on lack, our life feels lacking. It is purely a matter of focus." - Susan Jeffers

If you keep the attitude of gratitude every day, soon you will not have to even think about it. We can't wait until everything is perfect, or even okay, in order to feel thankful--we need to be grateful--in spite of (whatever). It's hard to appreciate the ordinary--except when you compare it to something hard or challenging or sad or bad. It's a matter of where you put your attention.

We've all done it-realized how lucky we are (gratitude) when we hear about something bad happening to others. Then we know we are having a good day. In Minnesota's recent major bridge collapse, we heard many stories about grateful people who had just passed over the bridge, or had been delayed-and were unharmed.

Why do some of us need to almost die to experience the joy available in this moment?

Positive emotions such as gratitude and love strengthen and enhance the immune system, helping you resist or recover from illness more quickly. Doesn't that sound good?

This book is full of all kinds of wonderful statements/reminders. Here are some special ones I pulled from the book:

' Gratitude begets generosity, which begets gratitude, which begets generosity.
' Train yourself to count your blessing (big and small, important and insignificant).
' Embrace the good, despite the suffering.
' In some ways, our attitude determines everything--how we see the world.
' Consumerism is fueled by our sense of never being satisfied.
' You cannot be grateful and unhappy at the same time.
' Worry is always about the future (the might or might not happen); gratitude is the here and now.
' You will be worn out trying to be perfect.
' Be open to the fullness of gratitude, the past and future fade away.

MJ Ryan is one of the creators of the NY Times bestselling Random Acts of Kindness series, as well as other books, including Acts of Gratitude. The words are superb, and some of the photos are stunning and fit the "a picture is worth a thousand words."

Armchair Interviews says: This is a wonderful gift book, for yourself or for those you care about. Every page reminds us of reasons we have right now for having the attitude of gratitude.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly Disappointed, November 21, 2007

Buford Onasis (Ardmore, OK USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Giving Thanks: The Gifts of Gratitude (Hardcover)
I did not realize when I ordered this book for my husband that it was a combination of two other gratitude books written by MJ Ryan. Although he enjoyed reading the other too books, he was somewhat disappointed when he started reading Giving Thanks: The Gifts of Gratitude that it was only a combination of the other two books.
