Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* As they did in the beautiful Brother Sun, Sister Moon (2011), Newbery medalist Paterson and cut-paper artist extraordinaire Dalton combine their considerable talents to bring to young people the concept of giving thanks. Paterson offers several meditations on ways she experienced thanksgiving, gratitude, and love throughout her life. Following each are several pages of poems, hymns, and snippets of praise songs from various cultures and religions, allowing readers to experience emotions and practices through many voices. Dalton, who is a practitioner of the early-nineteenth-century American paper-cutting technique called scherenschnitte (“scissor cuts”), has used paper “antiqued in a coffee solution, ironed, and illuminated with watercolor.” She fashions wondrous garlands, lattices hiding birds and rabbits, individual flowers and butterflies, and frames housing families reading books. The considerable thought to design—from substantial buff-colored pages to the placement of the art—is balanced by an equal appreciation for the works selected. Wonderful to have on hand for Thanksgiving, this is a book to be picked up throughout the year and savored and discussed. Grades 4-7. --Ilene Cooper

This is a wonderful book with a theme I have been hunting for formonths. We need more books about giving thanks because many people on this planet are not as fortunate as we and have little to give thanks about!

The illustrations are gorgeous! They are made from cut paper, and are beautiful! There are some small, colored illustrations, too. Those are pretty, though they are less seen. I like the variety of poems and prayers and praises in the book, and that they are divided up into sections about different things. I like how there are quotes, poems, songs, prayers scattered in the book. They are from all different cultures and times. There is really something for everyone in this book!

Pamela Dalton is a master of scherenschnitte. No I didn’t sneeze. Scherenschnitte is the art of paper-cutting. I think you will agree about Ms. Dalton’s master status when you look at the illustrations in the book.

Any book by Katherine Patterson sends a "must read" through my heart. And, I am not disappointed by this compilation of poetry, song and prayers of thanksgiving and gratitude to God for love, life and peace. As a reader of literature I am reminded throughout this small book of themes of gratitude from writers of all faiths and ethnicities. The art which supports the texts is intriguing. It supports and amplifies the message.

This collection of thankful thoughts has something for everyone. From familiar prayers to ancient blessings, Katherine Paterson has collected expressions of gratitude that put heart-stirring feelings into words. Her personal reveries throughout the book inspire reflection about the feelings that are expressed. Pamela Dalton's cut-paper artwork adds a layer of elegance and serenity, making the book a very special treasure.

Uplifting and down-to-earth at the same time, it's a perfect resource for daily meditation, especially during stressful times. It will also be terrific for holiday gift giving.
