4.0 out of 5 stars The title says it all!, April 10, 2000

This review is from: Try Giving Yourself Away (Paperback)
I first heard a reference to the book in a sermon, so I went looking for it. David Dunn writes delightfully of the various ways he has brought joy to the lives of others by simply thinking of and acting upon ways to serve others. If we would follow the principles set forth in this little volume, the world would be a much happier place.

David Dunn captures the essance of what humans strive for in perfecting our race. By giving yourself away you gain the greatest gift of all. It's all about heart, and sharing ours, and he captures the very core of the matter in this delicious story. I found the book, or shall I say it found me, just when I needed to remember that the greatest thing we give is ourself & our attention to anyone or anything. Blessings to this author for getting it & sharing it so wonderfully!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Yet Effective, April 2, 2001
This review is from: Try Giving Yourself Away (Paperback)
I have kept this book as a favorite in my library for the last 10 years. It offers ways we can give more of ourselves without dipping into a piggy-bank or feeling taken advantage of. I highly recommend reading this little book! It is a quick read with humor, joy and love springing from each page. The book was written in the 1940s and the principles still apply to today's society. That alone tells of the truths offered within its pages. PositiveResults.com

Try Giving Yourself Away by David Dunn -

The author has invested a lifetime in "giving himself away" through attitudes and actions. His philosophy of life is that the world would be a much better place and people would be much happier if everyone would try following these examples. Everyone has something of himself to give - his time, a smile, a note of appreciation, a kind word and idea to share without reward. The books focus is on giving away the things we can give, rather than ust material things. This book shares the joys of giving and its immeasurable rewards.

5.0 out of 5 stars ----The message in Try Giving Yourself Away is awesome----, October 4, 2010

This review is from: Try Giving Yourself Away (Paperback)
During a recent clean out of my book shelves, I discovered this wonderful book by David Dunn. It's a small hardback and had no dust cover. There was no identification inside, but I believe that the book had belonged to a relative who had passed away some time ago.

TRY GIVING YOURSELF AWAY was a fortunate find for me! I had been thinking of how and what I could personally do for others and this small book says it all. The book, is only 63 pages long, and very readable. It really makes you think about all of the ways that you can add joy, love and maybe a little bit of happiness to another person's life. I know that from now on when I feel like complementing or lending a hand to someone I will!

When a senior citizen is struggling to lift those heaving items in her grocery cart, it's a small thing, but helping put the groceries on the counter shows that we care. Spending the time in telling a manager in a store when a clerk has gone out of their way to help you with a purchase means a lot to that clerk. Their boss knows they're doing a good job!

Even telling an old friend how much you've valued their friendship is something so worth doing, but let's face it how often do we take the time to do that? It takes a few seconds to make someone smile and feel pleased that they are appreciated in this big world!

Of course donating money is a tremendous help to the needy, and many people do that when they can, but don't forget the small gesture of a compliment or a helping hand. It goes a long way in making someone feel good!

I keep this book close at hand!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites, January 22, 2012
This review is from: Try Giving Yourself Away (Paperback)
This is one of my all time favorites. I try to give it a re-read every couple of years but usually find that I've given my copy a way and have to get another one.
The book essentially gives some motivation and practical examples of how to adjust your attitude such that you get in the habit of sharing a little kindness with everyone you meet. In this way, end up improving the quality of your own life. Keeping this kind of attitude up takes a little work which is why I have to do the periodic re-reads.
The author isn't one of the great literary giants by any stretch, but the message is just genuine. These days one of the bonus bits of fun I get out of reading it comes from his examples. The book was written years ago and so some of his references just take you way back the pre-internet and cellphone world. This doesn't detract from the overall message, just adds a little interesting character.
