Read other people's remarks - Wow!! Something wrong there - I have played this about 4 times since I got it 2 days ago and also taped it for a cassette for my car. How on earth can people not just love this - maybe too young for the songs? They forget people get older - just wait - and his voice is still terrific. Thank you for sending it to me Val Luttrell

This review is from: I'm Glad There Is You (Audio CD)
This wonderful album has Vic Damone singing brilliantly with exquisite musical arrangements; this is a must-have for his fans! Vic is in excellent form throughout this album and the quality of the sound is excellent. The artwork is nicely done, too.

The album begins with Vic Damone doing great justice to "An Affair to Remember" with Percy Faith & His Orchestra. Vic's rich baritone voice works wonders for this ballad and it makes a beautiful opening number. "Wait Till You See Her" is very pretty; Vic gives this a most sensitive treatment and that percussion enhances the beauty of the number. "Just Say I Love Her" charms me with its exquisiteness; Vic sings this flawlessly in both Italian and English. Terrific!

"The Things We Did Last Summer" is classic easy listening music that I could never tire of--now THIS is great music! Vic never lets go of a single superfluous note and I'm very impressed. He also handles complex tempo and key changes with panache. "How Deep Is the Ocean" is romantic and the music fits in perfectly with Vic Damone's vocals. In addition, "We Kiss in a Shadow" from "The King and I" shines brighter than silver and gold when Vic Damone delivers it faultlessly; he sings this straight from the heart and just one listen proves it.

"Non Dimenticar" makes good use of the strings; this number is one of my very favorites on the album. The backup chorus harmonizes well--not that Vic Damone ever needed backup, but they do sound pretty good anyway. I would like to think that Nat "King" Cole and other contemporaries of Vic Damone would certainly have approved of this fine rendition of this tune!

"I'm Glad There Is You" is another gem; and "Life Does a Man a Favor" also pairs Vic with Percy Faith & His Orchestra. "Life Does a Man a Favor" has Vic squarely in the spotlight--that music is wonderful but wisely the musicians never even try to steal the show away from Vic--this is his number ands that's grand. The album ends with Vic Damone performing a sublime rendition of "Gigi" from the movie of the same name; and it all makes me want to push the replay button on my CD player to enjoy this all over again!

Vic Damone was and always will be one of the best male vocalists of the twentieth century; we are all so much better off for his having shared his talents with us. Thank you, Vic Damone!

2.0 out of 5 stars I'm glad this was cheap, June 8, 2002

Words fail me. Ponderous. Pretentious. Overwrought. No, not "overwrought." That's not the right word. Anyway, this collection of adult-pop marvels from the mid-fifties to (I'm guessing) early sixties includes Great American Songbook items, movie tunes, and whatnot. Damone has a fabulous voice, and some of the orchestral backings are outstanding (Percy Faith and Frank De Vol, mainly), but nothing is more painful than arty renditions of pop songs. This stuff isn't Mozart or Schubert. It doesn't deserve the hushed and reverent treatment it receives here.

For those who don't fully appreciate the revolution in lyrics wrought by "Earth Angel" and "Book of Love," dig (or, better yet, bury) the following sample, from the fourth track: "The leaves began to fade, like promises we made. How could a love that seemed so right go wrong?" You've been warned.
