if you have grown up in a typical scandinavian family (especially norwegian) then this is for you. these are songs from your grandparents time in their language you might not know all the workds but your sure will identify the tunes as those who grew up in the 30's 40's 50's 60's and 70's will see as soon as the first few notes are played. can't loose with this one.

While I'm not Scandinavian, as previous reviewer is, I married a Danish-American woman, so I've been exposed to some Danish culture. We picked this up on a weekend vacation, and it promptly became one of our favorite Christmas CDs. Beautiful voice and music, not to be missed.

This album has been with me for years. I first bought it while visiting Norway in the early 90's, when both I and Sissel were still young! This album was recorded when she was a mere seventeen years old; a fact that makes the vocal performances much more than remarkable. She is a true soprano, and she can wring tears from your eyes with her performance of the usually simple song, Oh, Helge Natt (Oh, Holy Night). By the time the song climaxes, it has moved way beyond your ordinary, toe-tapping Christmas carol; if you are moved by music, you will find those rare and wonderful chills running from your spine to your fingertips. This album is filled with great renditions, featuring Sissel's prodigious talents, and her soaring vocals, that are a gift from God, through her, to us. If you are not Norwegian, buy this album (only one song is sung in English), for you are in for a rare and exotic treat. If you are, you probably know all about Sissel already. But this is the one Christmas album that tempts me to listen at all seasons of the year. Thank You, Sissel ... I believe this is one of the best Christmas albums of all time. Enjoy!

I have been a fan of Sissel Kyrkjebø for some years now. She has a beautiful pure lyrical soprano voice. She creates wonderful albums which are a mélange of classical, easy-listening and pop tracks.
Glade Jul is Sissel's Christmas album. It is sung in Norwegian except for "Mary's Boy Child". Her version of "O Holy Night" is sublime. If you like Sissel's other albums, you will love this one. |
