Much Better than the Ready To Assemble,

If you want something heavy duty, you want to buy this versus the ready-to-assemble (RTA) versions. These are welded construction. Having looked at the ready to assemble versions and compared it to this the welded versions are vastly superior. I am glad I purchased the 'premium' versions.
If you want something just to look nice, but won't be doing much that is heavy duty, the RTA versions are probably fine. The welded versions are heavy, so you will want 2 people to move them around until you get the caster set installed. Now the details: Pros: Price - overall as compared to competition, after much web searching, is fairly reasonable. Casters - The caster set is included, unlike the RTA version. I don't know anyone who puts this kind of heavy equipment for a garage directly on the floor. Keep this in mind when comparing prices between the RTA. Extra Depth - The 24 inch depth and drawers that can pull out 90% of the way is very useful as compared to the 18" versions of competitors. Easy Assembly - Assembly of the casters took 15 minutes. Key Lock - There is a key lock that allows for easy movement without drawers opening or guarding your tools if you are using this at a jobsite / shared shop. Construction - The welded construction is done very well. This can definitely support the amount of load they specify it to hold. Cons: The drawers are non-latching. They do have a key lock, so this is not a major con. Some competition have the drawers that latch and require you to lift the handle to open a drawer.

Goes very well with the gladiator workbench. Rolls under the bench and can roll out for extra work surface. deeper than most standard tool chests so holds a lot.

Tough and heavy,

I agree that these are tough and require two to move around without the casters. I would prefer that the front casters rotate like the back ones do. I'm not sure why the design requires fixed front casters, but it limits the motion severely when pushed up against a wall.
Overall I am pleased with these cabinets and they have made a big difference in my workshop. It used to be piled high with stuff that is now conveniently stored in drawers. Bit of a short term problem remembering where things went, but that will come. These are very heavy boxes and required a freight carrier for delivery. The shipper caused some minor damage which I could repair, but I would rather have not had to go through that. Probably better to get them from a local distributor if possible. I also bought a GearBox which came FedEx and had no problems. Still pretty heavy, but light enough to ship with a major carrier. It made a difference.

The cabinet was well made (had a little dent but nothing a plier can't straighten. Delivery was good and reliable. The caster wheels are hard, solid plastic. I can't complain..cheaper than Sears and still great product.

Great Tool Chest,

This is a great tool chest. I think its a great size too, and holds all of my household tools. Ive been looking at other brands, even within the Gladiator line. You cant go wrong with the Premier series. The thing I like best about my Gear Drawer is the fact that it is 25 inches deep. Most other toolchests for the average consumer are 18 inches. The deeper the drawer, the stronger the metal needed to support the weight and structure. Some other reviewer complained about 'overspray' from chemicals etc....I have no problems with chemicals from my garage on my Gladiator pieces, and Ive had my other pieces for 1.5 years and they still look new except some scuffing on the shelves which is expected. I do quite a bit of gardening in the summer and spring and use 'chemicals'. If overspray is an issue for you, dont point it in the way of your valuables! I just may buy another one to put under my 8 foot Gladiator bench.

Not worth the price,
This review is from: Gladiator GarageWorks GAGD275DRG Premier Modular GearDrawer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I finally saved up enough money to redo my garage. I purchased three of the 36-inch large GearBox cabinets plus three of the 28 inch wall units. They really looked good, so I also purchased one of the five-drawer modular GearDrawer tool cabinets. Assembly is required, but that's OK -- even on a sweltering hot day. One person can do some of the work, but it will take two people to complete installation -- particularly when you install the doors.
If you are looking for precision cabinets for your garage, then these are most definitely NOT the way to go. These cabinets are not heavy duty. Some might say that they are flimsy. The thin metal doors dent easily. When I unpacked one of the kits, one of the doors had a small dent at the edge. When I attempted to straighten the dent, the metal fractured. Worst of all, the finish does not stand up to normal garage chemicals. For example, do you have bugs in your garage? Do you spray for them? Then whatever you do, DO NOT ALLOW overspray to get on the doors because the door finish will stain and you will not be able to clean it off without stripping the finish. By the way, if you read the pamphlets that come with this product, you will not find any warnings about stains from chemical overspray, nor will you find any guidance on the proper care and maintenance of the product. When you read the warranty, you will find that Gladiator Garageworks will not cover "[s]urfaces damaged due to chemical interaction resulting in corrosion of paint or metal." These cabinets are now three weeks old. They haven't had a chance to corrode. Yet, the finish is damaged, and anything I do to clean them only makes it worse. I expect thin skin on people -- not garage cabinets. These cabinets are made to sell, not to use. So, if you want to spend five times the value for garage cabinets that "look good" AND you plan to never use them, then this is the way to go. They make a pretty picture, but a lousy product. |
