Tommy Riley (James Marshall) goes to a different school and is immediately bullied around and threatened by several of the school's students. After getting in a street fight, Pappy Jack (Robert Loggia) notices Tommy's strong and fierce punch and invites him to be a boxer. Tommy was formerly a boxing champion before coming to this school and his record is undefeated. This town is full of gangs and violence, and one day Tommy helps a black boxer named Lincoln (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), and they then have a good friendship. Tommy is now making good money being a boxer and he has some friends, but something just doesn't seem right.

"Gladiator" is an exciting boxing and drama movie. What makes it so great is not only the exciting fights, but the great acting by everybody in the movie, mainly James Marshall, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Tommy's promoter, Jimmy Horn (Brian Dennehy). If you like exciting boxing movies that have a plot or just great movies in general, I recommend getting "Gladiator."

After seeing some of the reviews, I decided to go ahead and buy this movie as well. I was very pleased and enjoyed the movie. It's nothing serious like the first two Rocky movies, but light hearted action fun. It pretty quick paced so you don't get bored. I'd compare it more to being similar to Rocky IV in terms of pacing. The story is simple enough about a young, white boxer who, through a turn of bad luck, finds himself in the poorhouse and has to box to settle his dad's gambling debts. The acting is believable unlike the recent Star Wars Attack of the Clones fiasco. Cuba Gooding and James Marshall both put in great performances. The boxing, although a little over the top sometimes,is still great to see although I'd like to have seen longer training sequences. The quality of the dvd picture is great as well. What they don't mention on Amazon's techincal data is that the dvd has both a widescreen and standard full format presentation on either side of the disc so you can watch the movie whatever way you want. I'd definitely recommend this disc for the boxing movie enthusiast.

Excellent Movie. One of my favorite movies that these actors made together.

Cuba Gooding Jr. is great in this movie, no wonder he is a great movie star and James Marshall doesn't get enough credit as an actor, he needs to play more roles like this... they way the filmed this movie was great... old fashion, made you feel you were right there with them.

Cuba Gooding Jr. was an upcoming star at this point, it just was starting out in his carrer... look at him now.

A terrific movie about underground boxing, teenagers caught in the web of a viscious promoter and the ultimate triumph of friendship. There was humor and great action to go with a compelling story. I loved it.

Terrific movie about a crooked promoter who shows what Boxing is about...Business and greed...Money and Power...Sad But True...I Recommend it...Fine performance by all actors...

This movie must have had really bad promoters.

I never heard of it when it came out.

The only reason I watched it was on accident. I turned it on thinking it was the other Gladiator (R Crowe Ancient Greece movie).

I ended up liking this one better than the Gladiator I intended to watch.

All the actors were excellent, Cuba (of course), the main character did good but I've never seen him since, the bad guys really made you hate them & the girlfriend did well too for her short role.

The setting was perfect & fit well with the story, the music mixed well also & the story was great even though its kind of common.

This is definitely a movie worth buying. I watch it whenever I notice its on.

When I first saw this movie, I though WOW! A kid & his family down on there luck, looking for a second chance. I think it is great to have a talent that you can fall back on like Tommy in the movie. From a fighter accept It was great that he did have a talent, & then Had to fight his way to freedom, that was great. Great american movie.

I am a big Cuba Gooding, Jr. fan. I have seen most of his movies, included among those, "Boyz N The Hood," "Gladiator," "Snow Dogs," "Judgment Night," "Radio," "Rat Race," "A Murder of Crows," etc. This movie is one of my favorite movies of all time and it is good because it shows that there can be positive relationships between people of different races, even in times of adversity.

This film is as good if not better than the latest film of the same name. It does not depend on special effects (in the form of a fat budget) to keep you interested, I just cannot stop whatching it, I must have seen it over 50 times. It is with out a doubt one of those films you can whatch over and over (like "Starwars"). Everyone I know who has seen it has gone out and bought it. The story line and the acting are excellent, they really hit the nail on the head with the realism.

I first saw this movie when it came out fifteen or twenty years ago and got it on video. I have been trying to get it on DVD for years, but it is not available in Australia. Thanks to Amazon I can watch it again and again.
