About the Author

Dr Fergus Nicoll is a well-known journalist and broadcaster who has a long-standing interest in African affairs, in particular in the history of Sudan. After 24 years with the BBC, he now works for the Rift Valley Institute. His publications include The Sword of the Prophet: The Mahdi of Sudan and the Death of General Gordon, Shah Jahan: The Rise and Fall of the Mughal Emperor, and An Index to the Complete Works of al-Imam al-Mahdi.

More About the Author

Fergus Nicoll has been a BBC journalist since 1988. He published his first book on 19th century Sudan, "The Sword of the Prophet", in 2004. The book is also available in paperback. An Arabic translation was published in 2009 in Omdurman, Sudan, under the title "Seif al-Nabi: Mahdi al-Sudan". His second book, a biography of the 17th century Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, was published in 2009. His third book, provisionally titled "A Perfect Pandemonium: The Khartoum Journals of General Gordon and Colonel Stewart", will be published in 2011.
