5.0 out of 5 stars Great mute
This mute does a great job. Much better than I had anticipated. It really dampens the sound of my cello, but allows the various notes to remain distinctive. It works so well that my electronic tuner will still pick up sound and allow my to tune my cello with the mute in place.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good orchestral mute, not so much.....
Well, it certainly wasn't a practice type mute. My house mate could still hear me practicing in her room across the hall. It is equivalent to a normal orchestra mute. If i needed another orchestral mute, I would like it. Not so good for practicing with other people in the same area as you. But I needed a mute that wouldn't allow my house mates to hear me practicing late...

5.0 out of 5 stars My students love this mute!, June 24, 2011
This review is from: Glaesel Cello Practice Mute
Whether I teach Violin, Viola, Cello or Bass, my students love this mute. This mute allows my adult students to practice without disturbing people. They tell me they practice twice as much if not more after they get one, so I'm very happy too! The violin practice mute dampens 70% of the sound while the smaller round Tourte Violin Mute dampens 30% and sweetens the sound. This cello practice mute dampens about 40% or 50% of the sound. Not as effective as the violin mute as in cutting the volume, but still worth getting.

I wish this bigger Practice Mute had existed when I was growing up because I drove my family crazy with all the practicing I did! "Now, have you finished?" "Why must you keep playing scales?" "Is it really necessary to practice that much?" "Didn't you practice enough after school?"

To think all of that could have been avoided. :)

PS: be sure to press the mute down all the way on the bridge. Students make the mistake of just letting the tip of it attach to the top of the bridge.

Also, if you'd like something that makes your instrument quieter than this Practice Mute, try a metal mute.

But I needed a mute that wouldn't allow my house mates to hear me practicing late into the night. I ended up returning it. At least I tried it, and now I know.

Just place this thing over the cello's bridge and it will reduce the sound, but at the expense of tone. It fits very snuggly on mine and won't fall off, even if the cello is laid on its side.

Without the mute the cello sounds open and warm, but with it on the cello sounds nasal-y and buzzy to me. It can be annoying, and even frustrating, but the loudness of the cello *is* decreased. By how much? I'd say maybe half as loud. So it's still loud enough to possibly annoy someone. Also, with the mute on there seems to be a compression effect, so playing heavier doesn't necessary make the cello louder.

I guess this mute is the next best thing if you have hostile neighbors or lack one of those "silent" electric cellos. On the other hand, this mute is a really inexpensive solution that comes at a cost, of course.

Does the cello lose *something* with it on? Yes, but sometimes you've just got to practice late at night!

3.0 out of 5 stars Of the three mutes I've used, this muted the least., December 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Glaesel Cello Practice Mute
I have used this mute, the Heavy Brass Practice Mute for Cello and the Artino Cello Practice Mute, and this mute was the least effective. I also found that you had to fit it correctly or it would make some notes louder than they would be unmuted! My favorite mute is the heavy brass one, followed by the artino. The heavy brass mute needs to be put on properly, though. You need to make sure it is quite snug with the bridge or else it will vibrate and it could potentially fall off while you are playing.

All three of the mutes have the exact same slit sizes (for fitting your bridge), so if one of them does not fit your bridge, it is likely that your bridge is too thick.

Works well on my cello. The bridge is not narrow so I have to use a little force to get this thing on there. I'm always worried about moving the bridge when I do that but so far hasn't been a problem.

Mutes the sound by at least 50%, doesn't affect the tone much. Shipping cost more than the mute itself.

I wasn't sure between this or the metal mute for slightly more. I asked my instructor and he said he routinely drops his mute on his cello so to get the rubber one so you don't damage the body.

Fit the Cello, muted the sound and was cheap. I would guess the sound was cut by half by this mute. Well worth the money. It seems durable also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Decreases Volume by 50%, October 14, 2011

This cello mute is a great buy. It is inexpensive and cuts the volume of my practice in half. I still will not play the cello while my family is asleep because it is too loud even with the mute. But I think this would be great to use if you are in a hotel room practicing or around other people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works as well as I thought it would., August 17, 2011

It's a solid rubber mute, easy to install, you can even bend the side up to make sure it cups your whole bridge firmly.

For those of you that think this mute will allow no one else to hear you aside yourself, you're sadly sadly mistaken, but as you see I've given it five stars. It definitely lowers the sound from the instrument by about 40-50%, and it greatly enriches the tone quality of what you do get to hear.

It doesn't skew intonation, as long as you tune your instrument before putting the mute on. If you tune afterward, it might sound slightly more in tune but will not be so when you take the mute off, keep that in mind.

Great product, great value, I'm not sure why I waited so long to buy one.
I still wish I could practice at 3 am, but with this I can at least practice during the day and not notably disturb anyone else.

If you are expecting to be able to play with this mute on your bridge and others nearby won't hear you, this will be a disappointment. However, it does mute the sound of the cello as others have said, ~ 50%. In fact when I went to orchestra rehearsal and people were setting up, I started to warm up and I was not filling the room; the sound seemed more "private" if that makes sense. I'm usually embarrassed to warm up (I'm still kind of a beginner) but the mute changed all that. And there is no deterioration to the sound when I practice. I will say that my teacher's mute does not have solid ends so he can push his down further on his bridge than I can with mine, but mine still works. The solid ends make it so I can only push it down halfway. Since I haven't used any other mutes, this one seems fine.
