this has been released domestically at an affordable price! For some time now I've refrained from purchasing this because of the exorbitant import price tag. I'm glad I waited. Not only did I save money but I picked this up hot on the heels of purchasing the rehashed EP collection 'rost pocks' and it plays like a brand new release, enough so to keep me satisfied until Jan and Andi graces us with something new.'glam' apparently is the soundtrack to a movie of the same name, but it doesn't play like a soundtrack. It's a cohesive album. The third installment in what I call MoM's ambient trio: 'vulvaland', their first release which explored identical ambient territories as the orb; 'instrumentals' (until recently an LP only release like 'glam') which took the ambient atmospherics of 'vulvaland' and infused them with a healthy dose of MoM's trademark bleeps and melodies; and finally 'glam' a further extension of 'instrumentals'. Tracks are stripped down to their bare essentials leaving behind swirling atmospheres, melodic bleeps and deep dubby bass beats. Disregard past reviews stating there are little or no beats on 'glam' or that this disc doesn't sound like any other MoM. Not true. Checkout the fuzzy bass and sheet metal beats of 'grindscore'; 'mood leck backlash' uses the same tinkling melodies found on 'gocard' from 'iaora tahiti'; 'flim' starts off with a wall of sonic noises, scratchy static and weird rumblings before fading into a drifty two minute downtempo groove; 'snap bar' explores familiar ambient trance territory as old school future sound of london and 'glim', the closer track, is actually a track that was previously released on MoM 'cache couer naif' EP. To say this doesn't sound like MoM obviously means you're not an actual fan of MoM. 'glam' is chock full of all of MoM trademark atmospheres, melodies, bleeps and beeps. You'll find many familiar sounds and beats from 'iaora tahiti' and 'instrumentals' throughout. 'glam' is sometimes eerie, highly atmospheric yet purely MoM. If you really liked 'vulvaland' or 'instrumentals' you'll definitely love this. Although not your typical MoM fare, it is a must have for all MoM fans.

not only my favorite of all the wonderful Mouse on Mars releases, but the best example of this kind of music yet. subtle, sweet, rhythmic, ambient, weird. i listen to alot of the new "electronica" and not since Cluster has anyone displayed such skill and creativity while keeping it listenable.

GLAM INDEED,

This is by far the best Mouse on Mars album I have ever heard. Perhaps because it was intended to be a soundtrack, the pieces have much more atmosphere and depth than on previous MOM albums. Often it sounds like the listener is suspended somewhere between the deep recesses of their computer and a reverberant aquarium. There is so much audio happening through-out, musical or otherwise, that every listen reveals something different. The songs all segue into each other, giving the album a cohesiveness the group sometimes lacks. This cd is definetly worth the hefty import price tag (and has more tracks than the domestically available vinyl)

Music From Mars,
By A Customer
This review is from: Glam (Audio CD)
"Glam" is EXCELLENT. Similar in sound and mood to Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works vol. II", but with more variation and more beats. The music alternates from quiet passages of peaceful melody to darker soundscapes and strange noises. There's just enough sonic disturbance to break the quieter moments, just when the listner unexpects it most. Some of the most alien sounds I've heard are on this CD, ranging from fluttery, scratchy, and bubbly. For those who enjoy Mouse On Mars's upbeat/dance music will be in for a shock on "Glam". This is a side of the band not heard on their domestic US releases. It is worth the listening experience.

This was supposed to be a French film sound track. The director heard the music and said it wasn't commercial enough, that says alot. If you like this look for "Instrumentals", hard to find, but worth the effort.

NOT the best Mouse on Mars album ever!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Glam (Audio CD)
For me, Mouse on Mars is a DANCE band...the beat is the strongest part of my favorite Mouse on Mars songs. All the blips and bloops, whizzes and rushes are great, they often form, in their layering, interesting melodies and that is what distinguishes the good MOM songs from the rest. But the fact is, they are all overlaid over dancable, often almost-drum-and-bass beats. This album, beginning as it did as a film score, has no rhythm track. It works well as an ambient album, but that is not what I'm looking for when I buy a Mouse on Mars record. For me, the best Mouse on Mars album is still Iaora Tahiti. Oh, and as for the extra track on the CD not on the album version that came out a few years ago... it turns out to be "Glim". Which you can get on the Cashe Coeur Naif CD EP. If you're a completist, by all means, get this CD...it's better than Vulvaland! But not their best.

Vinyl is so silly.,
By "donkeye" (all up in your face) - See all my reviews

I love all the reviews where people go on about how this is the best album by Mouse on Mars they've ever heard. No doubt if you've spent nearly 40 dollars on it you're going to appreciate it!That said, Mouse on Mars is one of those groups where I have the need to own absolutely everthing they've put out. So I bought this album on vinyl and since I hate vinyl, I rarely listen to it. It's like my Oval album Diskont 95, with the vinyl it comes with a whole set of remixes. But it's on vinyl so I never hear it. Why should I be made to flip an album half way through it in the year 2001? Anyway, it is more ambient that most of their stuff, and on of the songs with beats appears on another album, I think Autoditacker, or something from that era. But it's a very nice album, very laid back, very organic. It's worth some amount of money, though I suspect if you buy it at this price it will instantly become your favourite MOM album of ALL TIME. Keep up the good work, kids! Keep buying those albums! You'll be cool soon enough. I'm almost there, myself. I can taste it. It tastes like, like, freedom! |
