3.0 out of 5 stars Glamorous Movie Stars of the Nineties, April 13, 2005
This review is from: Glamorous Movie Stars of the Nineties Paper Dolls (Paperback)
This book is an improvement on the previous one in the series (Glamorous Movie Stars of the Eighties). The stars featured actually wear glamorous costumes. All of the actresses are faithfully portrayed by the artist.
Unfortunately, as with the previous book in the series, Mr Tierney seems to have drawn the costumes from memory. The colors and details are wrong in several costumes, most notably the historical ones ("Emma", "Shakespeare in Love", "The Portrait of a Lady", etc).
Paper doll enthusiasts and people expecting an accurate record of film costumes of the eighties will be disappointed, but children who want a paper doll of their favorite star to play with, might find this book worthwhile.

3.0 out of 5 stars Is glamour returning?, April 19, 2007

This review is from: Glamorous Movie Stars of the Nineties Paper Dolls (Paperback)
After the low point of the '80s edition in this series, the one for the '90s could only be an improvement. And it is, with nice depictions of Halle Berry, Jodie Foster, Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow, Drew Barrymore, Nicole Kidman and Catherine Zeta-Jones. With hindsight, Halle, Nicole and Catherine might have been saved for the eventual edition of actresses from the 2000's; Halle's costumes for her '90s films are particularly unattractive. And surely another movie and costume could have replaced the Tinkerbell getup Julia wore in "Hook"; ditto the dull cape and gray dress Meg Ryan wears from "Restoration".

More interesting choices for glamorous actresses to represent the '90s might have been Sharon Stone ("Basic Instinct", "Casino", "Sliver", "Diabolique"), Annette Bening ("Bugsy", "Love Affair", "The Grifters"), Angela Bassett ("What's Love Got To Do With It?", "Malcolm X", "Waiting To Exhale", "How Stella Got Her Groove Back"), Uma Thurman ("Pulp Fiction", "Henry & June", "Gattaca", "The Avengers"), Demi Moore ("Indecent Proposal, "The Scarlet Letter", "Disclosure", "Striptease") and Kim Basinger ("The Marrying Man", "L.A. Confidential", "Ready To Wear"). Some of the costumes from these films are iconic movie fashion images, such as the white minidress from "Basic Instinct", the cigarette pants and white blouse from "Pulp Fiction" and the black evening gown from "Indecent Proposal".
