I received Glamorous Stars of the 1960's for my birthday and am very pleased with the book. The dolls are very well drawn and actually do justice to the actresses portrayed. The costumes are perfect in every detail, down to the grain of the fabric. Included are Jane Fonda and her red dress from Cat Ballou, Barbra Streisand with her dresse from Funny Girl and the gorgeous golden gown from Hello Dolly, Natalie Wood and her Maria dress from West Side Story, Anne Bancroft as Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Workery, and Julie Andrews as Maria in The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. My only problem with this work is the actresses chosen and those left out. I also thought some of the wrong outfits were used, like putting a costume from a relatively unknown movie in there instead of one from a more popular movie. Over all, though, I think Tom Tierney did a great job on Glamorous Movie Stars of the 1960's.

It's an unfortunate truth that costumes started to lose their glamor as movies entered the '60s. Fortunately for this book, most of the costumes are beautifully rendered and show a wide range of the kind of costuming that was becoming commonplace in this decade. Some glamour remains, but more could have been seen by selecting better film representations of the actresses depicted. For example, Shirley MacLaine wears some outrageous Edith Head gowns in 1964's "What A Way To Go!"; one of those would have been a great selection.

And although all of the actresses are representative of the period, Kim Novak is more readily identified with the '50s and might have made a nice choice for the book featuring costumes from that decade. And nothing against Anne Bancroft (she's a very fine actress), but none of her costumes are particularly interesting. I'd suggest replacing Kim and Anne with Ann-Margret (she pops up in the edition featuring '70s costuming, but would fit better in this '60s edition) and Julie Christie. It's a particular shame that Julie's films aren't represented with lovely costumes from "Darling", "Doctor Zhivago" and "Petulia".

Otherwise, this is a very interesting look at the gamut of film costuming in the '60s.

Some of the most popular movie stars of our age are featured in this book, so I'm sure it would appeal to many people. The likenesses are excellent, with Jane Fonda, Joanne Woodward, Kim Novak and Anne Bancroft standing out.
I didn't like the way some of the dolls are dressed from head to toe. This is especially strange in the case of the Jane Fonda and Natalie Wood dolls. The first is dressed in a long dress, but one of her costumes is a figure revealing one from "Barbarella". The second is dressed in a gown from "Gypsy", even though, playing a stripper, she wore many skimpy outfits in the movie.
Finally, some costumes are inaccurate (eg Barbra Streisand's beaded gown from "Hello Dolly" is the wrong color and the skirt doesn't flare out).
