This review is from: Glamour (Audio CD)
"Glamour" is the heaviest, and also least impressive, of Dave Davies' four solo albums. Compared to "AFL1-3603," which in places sounds more like a demo tape than a completed album, "Glamour"'s production is slick and professional, thickly layed with seemingly dozens of guitars and keyboard parts. It suffers in the songwriting department, however. Though they're both basically heavy metal albums, "AFL1-3603" threw in some lighter material ("Imaginations Real," "Nothin' More to Lose," "Run") for balance. Not much on "Glamour" could be described as fun or uplifting. Before long it starts to feel turgid and overbearing. The songs are well-crafted for the most part, but there aren't any real standouts, and even the better songs ("Is This the Only Way," "World of Our Own") tend to get lost in the morass. Fans of heavy metal and prog may find worth in "Glamour," but those looking for the same energy and melodic sense that Dave brought to the Kinks, and to his other solo work, won't find much of that here.
