A definite favorite!,

This review is from: Glamour's Gourmet on the Run (Hardcover)
It's amazing that all of the previous reviewers of this book have had such similar experiences with it as we have. My wife picked up a copy several years ago, before we were married, and we were surprised at how good it is. We also used it until it fell apart, but were lucky enough to find a second copy at our local used bookstore. I actually came here hoping to find a "sequel."Whenever we're at a loss for what to cook for dinner, we turn to this book. The recipes are delicious, use only a few ingredients (which we often have around the house), and are quick and easy to prepare. Also included are illustrations that make techniques (like splitting a cornish hen) less intimidating, as well as charts (like ideas for marinades) that will inspire you to create your own recipes. We also bring the book when we're vacationing somewhere that has a kitchen. We can pick out a few recipes and know we will end up with a short shopping list of easy-to-find items. And they come out great without fail.

Excellent, basic cookbook, with bonus '80s nostalgia!,
By Gail Martin (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Glamour's Gourmet on the Run (Hardcover)
This is a terrific, basic cookbook, with simple-but-tasty recipes for almost any "normal" food you'd want to make, plus many more exotic things. But none of them are TOO exotic -- every ingredient in the book is something you'd be able to find at the smallest grocery store in the country. (For example, the hummus recipe suggests peanut butter as a substitute for tahini.) The photography is thorough and attractive, and now has the added bonus of showing table settings in a charmingly retro 1980s style! If this book gets reprinted, or if you find a copy at a used bookstore, buy it for yourself or as a gift for a new graduate. It's the perfect "first cookbook" for a young person, especially a young woman.

I agree with the previous reviewer--mine has not only fallen apart, it's also turned into a "scratch-and-sniff" book because of so many spatters and spills. I have a large cookbook collection, but return to this one over and over because of: a) simplicity of instructions b) good photo illustration (what's it supposed to look like?) c) great charts with simple ideas for making a variety of "staples" (chicken, pasta, veggies) d) complete menus for special occasions

Tops the stack of more "advanced" cookbooks I have,
This review is from: Glamour's Gourmet on the Run (Hardcover)
I obtained this book at a garage sale after I was well into my years of being an experienced cook. It is by far the most used book in my extensive collection. The recipes are easy to understand, quick to prepare, and with almost no exceptions, turn out reliably great. I have cookbooks with recipes for the same items that are far more complex, yet not as consistent. I wish I had had this book when I was first starting out, because it would have saved me a lot of time and failures. I, too, was initially put off by the association with Glamour Magazine; don't let that deter you. You will wear this book out if you buy it; that's why I'm on this site - to order a newer copy!

Still great after all these years,
This review is from: Glamour's Gourmet on the Run (Hardcover)
My Mother gave me this cookbook as a gift shortly after it was published and shortly after I moved into my first apartment. I've had and really used this cookbook for all these years. On more than two occasions, I've opened this cookbook and recognized favorite recipes that I'd found in traditional gourmet magazines and couldn't believe were in this cookbook - really ahead of the times! When my niece moved into her first apartment, I started thinking about which cookbooks I had really loved and used on a regular basis. This is the first cookbook I sent her. Yes, I'm a bit embarrassed by recommending a "Glamour" book, but the fact is I think it is a really wonderful cookbook.

I, too, have worn out this book. I use it all the time. The recipes are guaranteed easy and delicious. I saw a copy at a discount bookstore once. I considered buying it, but mine wasn't in such terrible shape at the time. Now I NEED a new one. Please reprint this!

Glamou's Gourmet on the Run,

This book is so good that I have litterally worn it out. I am now in search of another copy since mine is falling apart. Every single recipe that I every made from this book had been delicious. I am never disappointed. I entertain guests quite often, and I always find myself returning to this book (out of the 100, or so cookbooks that I have collected) for ideas and recipes.

I first bought this cookbook some 25 plus years ago as I used to read Glamour & try the recipes that were featured, which were brilliant no fail ones for the then singleton! So when I discovered them & others in a cookbook . . . just had buy it. Well this is my third copy of it as I gave one to my now sister-in-law that was falling apart do to being well used & the same has happened to the second, so now I'm on my third copy. To me it is a must, when you are looking for no fail recipes that are not time consuming, complicated or made with terribly expensive ingredients that the end results taste wonderful! My husband even uses it too!

When I finally decided I needed to be able to cook for myself rather than relying on take-out and frozen entrees, I talked to some friends who live on their own home cooking and said, "Where do I start?" I laughed when they pulled out a Glamour cookbook, but they were insistent, so I checked out used books and secured a copy. I'm sold - BEST COOKBOOK EVER! There are enough quick recipes for the single cook to have me sitting down to chicken marsala as quickly as I can heat up a pizza. There are also an ample number of recipes for entertaining. All of them are manageable for a novice cook (plus there are instructions for more complicated tasks). I supplied a potluck picnic with a raspberry tart and some white wine sangria from this book and got rave reviews. In the early going, it felt like I was buying tons of stuff I didn't normally have to hand, but I'm beginning to build up a pantry that enables me to whip something together when I feel like there's nothing to eat in the house. My successes with this cookbook have made me more willing to try other recipes that used to look too intimidating. I'm here now looking to get more copies for my friends who are making the transition to cooking for themselves. Totally a worthwhile investment, and I agree, it should be reprinted!

My Gourmet on the Run,
This review is from: Glamour's Gourmet on the Run (Hardcover)
I have been collected Glamour's recipes forever, I specially loved the ones under Gourmet on the Run, but I never bought the book in the 80's. Now I have it and I am really enjoying it. I have added a bunch of new options after I got it.
