Indianapolis PI Deets Shanahan, a still-spry septagenarian, turns center stage over to his sidekick, Howie Cross. Indianapolis cop Max Rafferty is a closeted gay who wants to stay that way, but when he discovers the dead body of his lover, Morgan Lee, Rafferty fears not only that he'll be outed but also that he could be accused of Lee's murder. Rafferty turns to Cross for help in finding the real killer. The search takes Cross from the seedy bars of New Orleans to the wealthy suburbs of Indianapolis. Along the way, he meets a fundamentalist gay basher, a Catholic priest with an eye for young boys, and a whole string of Lee's former lovers. Although it's Cross' case, Shanahan can't help getting involved, too. A plot chockablock with unexpected twists, a succinct writing style reminiscent of Robert B. Parker, unusual characters, and deadpan humor add up to a top-notch read. Emily Melton
