Most HOLS fans are resigned to the fact that House will never achieve the fandom and greatness that it truly deserves. This is a mixed blessing for our ranks; on one hand we get to see their killer shows at cozy venues and talk to them after the concert, on the other hand, it's maddening knowing about something so great and not being able to share it with the world.

As an album, Glass Cockpit more or less defines the range and intensity of HOLS. From the frantic and loud headbanger 'Fingernail' to the sweet, childlike vocals of 'Homemade Zodiac', this album is moving and just flat-out impressive. It's production value is the best of all of their albums, including the new self-titled release, and is an excellent starter to the trio.

If you're into good guitar, kicking bass and catchy (and seemingly) nonsensical lyrics, this is your band. I may be resigned to the fact that HOLS will forever remain 'undiscovered', but for those happy few that know them, this is the Great Work. Check it out, I can't imagine anyone being disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Rah-Rah Review, August 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Glass Cockpit (Audio CD)
I hate to find a bunch of fan reviews of a CD that are 5 star reviews, but I can't give HOLS a four for this effort. Glass Cockpit is my first HOLS CD bought after they blew me away live at a show last year. Its also one of the few CD's I've found which captures most of the energy of a group's live show.

The songs are catchy and the vocals are great. Dave and Barb are the best male/female duo since Black Francis and Kim Deal sang for The Pixies.

I like the CD a lot because there are so many good songs. What makes it even better is the variety among the songs. HOLS definitely doesn't take the cookie cutter approach to making music. There's a lot of different stuff packed into the CD and nothing seems out of place.

High points on the CD for me are: "Carpool Lung", "Two-Tone Moon", "I'll Find It" and "Lazy".

Great CD! The others have said almost everything. If you have never seen them live you owe it to yourself to see them. Not only do they put on a heck of a show that you will remember for years they are great guys, and girl!

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY Addictive, September 29, 1999

My favorite tracks are "Balldropper", "Green is the Ground (ETS)", and "Fingernail". I guess it's a testament to the overall quality of this cd that none of these are the same as the previous reviewer's favorites. The songs' hooks stay with you all day long. Once you've listened to this cd a couple of times it will never leave your cd player for very long. Glass Cockpit stands up even when other quality cds start to burn out. Can you tell I like it?

5.0 out of 5 stars What? You never heard of these guys!!!!, March 19, 1999

This CD kicks ASS. Although they would undoubtedly call themslves a metal band; I call them the most Rockin poetic funrock shake-you-whole-body-down-till-you-drop (volume knob 15) band out there. This CD features Barb Shilf background vocals much more than previous CDs. Add Dave Deiblers guitar riffs and mondo mysterious 'n fun get-your-decoder-ring lyrics and you got a perfect CD. BUY THIS CD (and the others)-GO SEE THEM IN CONCERT. NOW!

This CD remains one of my favorites...not only is the music fantastic, but it brings back great memories of rocking out to these guys at Stebs (RIP) in Cedar Falls Iowa, a club they really adopted as their own.

This CD is absolutely incredible. All the songs have their own originality to them. This is the type of album that you pop in your car and EVERYONE who rides with you asks to borrow the CD. I've owned this CD for five years and it has a permanent home in my top 5 list.

5.0 out of 5 stars H.O.L.S. - the best band you've never heard!, January 27, 2003

I'm pretty sure that most people out there don't know much about House of Large Sizes unless you are a resident of a mid-sized Midwestern town who's actually been to one of their shows. This is one of the most talented local bands I've ever heard. Among the best of their albums is the 1997 release "Glass Cockpit." This is one of the few of their releases that feels like it wasn't thrown together at the last minute. W.A.R. records did an excellent job of producing this album and it is definitely worth checking out. "Cranko-American," the first tune on the album, will hook you the first time you hear it. Check out HOLS' other albums if you like Glass Cockpit. Also, check out their new self-titled release in late 2001. It is also quite impressive work! 5 stars
