Shirley Smith's GLASS HEN ON NEST COVERED DISHES IDENTIFICATION & VALUE GUIDE packs color photos on nearly every page of its value guide, and is a pick for any who frequent flea markets or garage sales in search of glass hen on nest covered dishes. From American to Asian and European productions, identifying marks, written descriptions, and comparisons and contrasts between makers and items seek to clarify the collecting experience to avoid confusion between makers and products.

This guide has been so useful to me as I recently found a huge selection of Hen on Nest covered dishes (about 55) at an Estate Sale. I plan to sell most of them and have already listed several and sold them thanks to the helpful information in this guide. It is very informative, as well, as far as the background on the different companies go.

However, be aware that there are many unknown manufacturing dates on many different colors as well as many different styles in the book (which is to be expected with the amount of this type of dish out there). Between the Internet and this book, I feel very confident about pricing the HONS that I picked up. I HIGHLY recommend this guide to anyone interested in collecting or selling.

One thing to keep in mind, though, the book can be a little tricky to maneuver around when you aren't familiar with the different styles of hen on nest dishes, as I was. It takes some time to study it and learn the different styles of hens. And for an untrained eye, you really have to read a lot in trying to identify different hens as there are quite a few that are made using the same molds or with similar style molds (yet by different companies).

All that said, this guide has been indispensable to me and I think it's a must-have for any hen on nest fan!! Shirley Smith is incredibly versed in the different styles and manufacturing processes and has done a fabulous job with this book!

I love this book. It includes so many hens.... evn copies from foreign glass companies. I was able to find each of my hens in this book, and found out one was quite rare.

I highly recommend this book, despite the high price. The full color photos and good reference info makes it worth it.

Great coffee table book too!

Recommended reading. Easy to read book. Has pictures of the main styles of chickens. Gives a good idea of value and which manufacturers to buy. Informs reader of rarity and what to look for

I purchased this book as a gift for my grandmother. She collects Hen on Nest covered dishes. My grandmother doesn't own a computer or know much about the internet. She had told me my uncle printed her out some information about Hens but the print was very small and it wasn't the information she was wanted. I found some information, but while searching came across this book. I knew this was the perfect gift for her. The look on her face said it all! This book would be great for anyone into those hen dishes.

Lots of pictures and history about these collectibles. I highly recommend that you get this if you are a serious chicken collector.

Wow. It is rare to find an antiques book like this in any field-- Smith's book is authoritative, complete, easy to use, and profusely illustrated.

THis book covers all of the known hen on nest dishes made in America and abroad from the 1800s through today. Photos are big, easy to see, and really helpful. If you buy this book, you will definitely be able to identify the maker of your hen on nest dish, and to learn a good bit about the manufacturer. I especially appreciated the sections on Atterbury, Challinor Taylor, Flaccus, and Portieux/Vallerysthal. Those who collect more modern dishes will appreciate the Westmoreland, Fenton, Hazel-Atlas, Indiana, and dozens of other sections.

Shirley Smith's book has been reviewed the National Milk Glass Collectors Society and has been endorsed as accurate and excellent. I personally found it to be exactly what I needed and incredibly helpful.

The only thing I would caution readers about it the "price guide" aspect. Antique prices fluctuate dramatically and regularly, and prices for hen on nest dishes have dropped in the age of online auctions.

This is a comprehensive book on glass hen-on-nest covered dishes. Kudos to Shirley Smith for a job very well done. She has made it quite easy to identify most any hen-on-nest dish you will encounter. It is a must have for any collector.

Indispensable book for the hen on nest collector. High quality book, with lots of glossy finish photoes. Provides detailed descriptions for each hen on nest (roosters also), information about the glass maker as well. You won't regret this buy.
