This beautifully color-illustrated series of 4 volumes presents examples and history of the glass company on Massachusetts' Cape Cod which made the name "Sandwich" famous. Factory records and glassmakers and decorators have been meticulously studied to write this fascinating history. Volumes 1 and 2 are being written. Volume 3 and 4 are now available. Volume 3 presents a foreword by Richard Carter Barret and accounts of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company between 1858 and 1882, the Cape Cod Glass Works 1858-1864, and the Cape Cod Glass Company 1864-1869. Sandwich Glass objects are grouped into chapters on vases and flower containers, cologne bottles, witch balls, toys, and specialized containers. A full discussion of Nicholas Lutz's work at Sandwich is an important part of this volume. Volume 4 presents 391 examples of Sandwich glass together with forewords by Richard A. Bourne and George Michael and chapters on the late phases of the Boston and Sandwich, Cape Cod, and Vasa Murrhina Glass Companies. Nehemiah Packwoods and J.B. Vodon glass cutters are presented with many examples. Candlesticks, insulators, frosted ware, late blown ware, threaded and epergne forms are each grouped together and many forms of each are shown.

About the Author

As a collector, Raymond E. Barlow has accumulated in excess of eight tons of fragments dug out from the actual site of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company as well as other small glass companies in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Some of his private collection has been on display at: Sandwich Glass Museum, Sandwich, Massachusetts; Colony House Museum, Keene, New Hampshire; Christian Dorflinger Museum, White Mills, Pennsylvania; The Jones Museum of Glass & Ceramics, Sebago, Maine; and Wheaton Village, Millville, New Jersey. As a writer, Raymond E. Barlow for many years wrote a column for several antiques periodicals and newspapers. As an authority, he devoted forty years to informative, humorous lectures, speaking to antiques collectors and dealers throughout the country. Ray Barlow also appeared on television programs including PBS George Michael's Antiques and ABC Good Morning, America. With over thirty years of appraising for estates and at Appraisal Days for museums and antiques shows, and over fifty years as a collector, Raymond E. Barlow has established respect and acclaim as the leading authority and historian of the glass industry in Sandwich, Massachusetts. As a collector, Joan E. Kaiser has spent thirty-seven years collecting Early American Glass, primarily Sandwich. Some of her private collection has been on display at: Sandwich Glass Museum, Sandwich, Massachusetts; and The Jones Gallery of Glass & Ceramics, Sebago, Maine. As a writer, she has written for several major antiques periodicals and newspapers, and edits the Sandwich Glass Museum's annual journal The Acorn. As an authority, Joan E. Kaiser has devoted twenty-seven years as a dealer in Early American Glass, twenty years of appraisal work, and eight years as manager to organize and conduct antiques shows. She presents slide lectures at symposiums and glass club meetings, and shares her knowledge at major glass shows. This is a superb tome, neatly documenting the history of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company's beginnings, struggles, and successes, as well as providing reference on glass whale-oil and burning-fluid devices. Photographs are many and clear, details amply given on the Company's products of the time, and pointers offered throughout on recognition between Boston and Sandwich items, other manufacturer's products, and reproductions. Any student, collector, or devotee of early lighting devices should own this volume.
