Book Description

0966571304 978-0966571301 December 1, 1998 1st
A Glassblower's Companion is a book about Giberson's views on glass technology. It is a collection of designs, essays, and glassmaking ideas which focus on the underlying philosophy of hot glass. It is a document that will be of interest to anyone who works with glass, whether he/she is a glassblower, a pate de verre caster, or a modern beadmaker, even someone who simply collects and loves glass. Archaeologists will be especially interested in the ancient glass explanations, as Giberson focuses on simple ideas that actually work.

On a very practical side, this book is about building and maintaining studio equipment. It has twenty-five chapters: five are on glory holes (from a small 6 inch paperweight maker's glory to a huge 4 burner unit with a 30 inch opening); ten chapters are about furnaces for melting glass, again from small to big; five chapters are on annealers and slumpers, kilns for casting as well; and finally there are five chapters on accessory glass making equipment. The purpose of the book is to allow the reader to acquire enough insight and knowledge while reading this document that he should be able to build his own studio equipment when finished.

About the Author

Dudley Giberson is a glassmaker from Warner, NH, who has had an active studio since 1968. Dudley developed his expertise primarily working alone (but was influenced by other early GAS members), Early on he learned the skills of glass blowing, pate de verre casting and murrine work. He spent a good number of years working on large copper foil stained glass windows and another 25 years developing and designing beads of all kinds and selling a line of intricate bead necklaces. In the early years he developed a special burner for furnaces and glory holes, the Giberson Ceramic Burner Head, which he patented (U.S. Pat. #3697000). Dudley is currently working on ancient glass puzzles, that is, how specific pieces of ancient glass were made. Dudley is still producing burners and elements for his studio equipment business.

One of a kind. Exceptional resource for general glass information and a pragmatic resource for building annealing ovens. Easy to read with great graphics and illustrations. I especially appreaciated the glossary of glass terminology.

2.0 out of 5 stars not very technical, July 30, 2010

This review is from: A Glassblower's Companion: A Compilation of Studio Equipment Designs, Essays, & Glassblowing Ideas (Paperback)
i bought both this book and glass notes 4.0 edition. glass blowers companion seemed to focus mainly on construction of furnaces and seemed to be quite old fashioned. i bought the book after seeing some plans for sale on building an annealer. the plans were NOT in the book and he only had like one page dedicated to making annealers. and his section on controlers was even shorter: basicly a crudely drawn picture of a kiln plugged into a box plugged into the wall. in fact, at this point he recommends that you buy glass notes if you want more info on these things.

my advice: dont buy this book. buy glass notes instead. it has all kinds of details and formulas on heating, elements, recipes and has a huge list of kiln/materials suppliers in the back. plus its written with a modern approach to building kilns and wasnt wrtten by a grumpy old fogy stuck in the 19th century of glass blowing.
