Book Description

Primary or chronic open angle glaucoma is a painless condition usually associated with high pressure in the eye. It affects approximately four per cent of all people over the age of fifty. Untreated, glaucoma is a major cause of blindness worldwide.

The second edition of Glaucoma: A Patient's Guide to the Disease, published in 2001, offered essential information about glaucoma and its treatment, presented in a simple question and answer format to allow patients to participate actively in the decision-making process along the road to successful maintenance of their vision. The third edition adds to and augments the previous edition by introducing important updates on new medical and surgical treatments and information on the latest techniques used to diagnose and follow glaucoma.

Graham E. Trope provides the answers to dozens of commonly asked questions in sections headed 'All About Glaucoma,' 'Tests for Glaucoma,' and 'All About Treatment.' Also included are discussions of possible complications, detailed illustrations, and a listing of glaucoma societies in Canada, the United States, and United Kingdom. This valuable guide is an essential reference not only for patients but also for all health-care professionals, including general practitioners and optometrists.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'This is a thoughtfully written, helpful booklet, which can be recommended to patients, especially when they are diagnosed with glaucoma, and to anyone who has to answer patients' questions about glaucoma.' --David J. Addison, MB, FRCSC "Annals RCPSC "

Review

'Ophthalmologists are often hard to understand: patients and their family physicians comment on our limited communication skills as we struggle to explain their eye problems ? With this book, Dr. Trope has succeeded for glaucoma patients, answering in print, with the help of excellent illustrations, the questions he will have been asked throughout his career as a glaucoma expert ? [It will greatly help ophthalmologists to be better understood.'

(Christopher J. Lyons, MB, FRCSC Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology )

'This is a thoughtfully written, helpful booklet, which can be recommended to patients, especially when they are diagnosed with glaucoma, and to anyone who has to answer patients' questions about glaucoma.'

(David J. Addison, MB, FRCSC Annals RCPSC )

'The booklet is for patients, and I am sure they will find it helpful and informative. I also recommend it to ophthalmology residents as a guide to formulating their discussions with patients.

(Ronald M.H. Pinkerton, MB Canadian Medical Association Journal )

An impressive, but simple overview of what those with gloucoma need to know. Written in plain english, explains treatment, risks and clarrifies the disease its cause and symptoms. As a new gloucoma patient, I found this most useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars What is glaucoma?, September 10, 2008
This review is from: Glaucoma: A Patient's Guide to the Disease (Paperback)
Dr Trope has published three editions of this book: the most recent edition was published in 2004 and represents a significant expansion of the earlier two editions. The definitions of the disease and other facts are presented in an easy to follow question and answer format.

The book is organised into the following parts:
I ALL ABOUT GLAUCOMA
II TESTS FOR GLAUCOMA
III ALL ABOUT TREATMENT
IV GLAUCOMA SOCIETIES (relevant to Canada, the UK and the USA)

The most common treatments for glaucoma are outlined in this book. It is interesting (to me, at least) to note that some of the drug treatments mentioned in the first edition of the book as being under development are now readily available: I am receiving one of them.

The question and answer format will suit many (if not most) patients. I would recommend this as a starting point for those who want to understand glaucoma without being overwhelmed by medical jargon.
