4.0 out of 5 stars Rough and ready Glazunov April 12, 2011
Glazunov's symphonies, especially in the slow movements, can easily assume the qualities of old film music or even"classical elevator music". These recordings however bring the music to life, as long as you can tolerate occasionally wobbly brass and less than precise orchestral ensemble playing. Rozhdestvensky, also with a Russian orchestra, is better in those regards but a bit less exciting in the 'stormy' passages. Either that set or the Svetlanov are preferable to Jarvi, Serebrier or otaka despite their more up to date sonics. Bakels and the Malaysian
orchestra could really put these symphonies on the map (listen to their Rimsky-Korsakov recordings).
