5.0 out of 5 stars See How the Best New TV Show of 2009 Began, September 16, 2009

This review is from: Glee - Director's Cut Pilot Episode (Limited Edition) (DVD)
After watching the pilot for GLEE, it was the most excited I've been for a tv show since I saw the pilot for HEROES three years ago. The show is being marketed as a musical comedy and while the show is full of music and comedy, it's also very dramatic and quite quirky. The closest thing to GLEE that's been on tv was ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. In May 2009 Fox made a bold marketing move and aired the pilot episode of GLEE after the finale of AMERICAN IDOL. That gave the country efour months to either become interested in the show or completely forget about it. The buzz built and, thank goodeness, the show seems like it will be a success

In the pilot episode, we are introduced to the main characters that will form "New Directions"/ Glee Club at William McKinley High School in Ohio. After the former sponsor is let go after "inappropriate behavior" with a student, teacher of the year and former McKinley student, Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) takes over the group. Auditions are held and after a little bit of questionable deal-making, Mr. Schuester is able to get the quarterback of the football team to join the glee club and the group of social outcasts seems destined for great things.

This special director's cut of the pilot includes about five minutes of footage that didn't air on tv, including a rendition of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" by Morrison. Also included on the DVD is a sneak peek of episode two (the first full twenty minutes of the episode, actually), a featurette about the dancing involved in the show, a talk with show creator Ryan Murphy, and a featurette entitled "What Is Glee?" that has characters from the show discussing what Glee means to them.

I'm a fan of GLEE and though the pilot episode will be a part of the upcoming DVD set, that won't be released until next spring. Until then, I'll watch the show on Fox and keep rewatching the uplifting (and in many ways better than the original) version of "Don't Stop Believin'". Recommended for gleeks and those who just have an interest in great television.

5.0 out of 5 stars dark comedy, September 7, 2009
This review is from: Glee - Director's Cut Pilot Episode (Limited Edition) (DVD)
"Glee" is similar in feel to the much missed comedy "Arrested Development" "Arrested Development - The Complete Series (Seasons 1, 2, 3) Basically, William McKinley High School had a great glee club at one time. That glee club competed and won state championships. The current glee club...well, there's nothing gleeful about it. When the glee club teacher gets fired for "inappropriate behavior", the Spanish language teacher decides to try to revive the glee club. He is told in no uncertain terms that the glee club has to bring in an audience (like the cheerleading squad) or the room gets rented out to AA. After all, AA pays $10 a person to use the space.
Throw into this mix a quarterback who reluctantly joins the glee club, more divas than VH1 Divas Live, a germaphobic co-worker with a major crush and a manipulative wife (excellently played by Jessalyn Gilsig fromNip/Tuck - The Complete First Season, the cheerleader's leader, Jane LynchBest in Show and other assorted quirky folks and you've got a funny show on your hands. All you have to do is sit back and let the sparks fly.
If you liked "Arrested Development" you will like "Glee".

The Ryan Murphy and Zach Woodlee interviews were worth the price of the DVD. Ryan explains how the casting and creating came about and Zach shows what the choreographer does and how he works up the routines. The first episode was just icing on the cake!

4.0 out of 5 stars I felt ripped off, February 10, 2010

I LOVE "Glee"...I thought I missed the pilot (as in this DVD) when it aired on TV as show #2. Calling it the Pilot episode is misleading. I loved the DVD and storyline as it was the beginning of this series. I've also gotten "Glee" Season One, but when it airs this spring, it is still listed as Season One. I don't know how the people of "Glee" are marketing the DVD, but it feels like I'm buying the same thing more than once. The episodes from these shows can be seen over and over from all of the talent in the cast and the storylines. Who can beat Jane Lynch in comedy? She's got some competition from the "Glee" geeks...and I like it! It's a twisted "Desperate Housewives" meets "High School Musical 1, 2 and 3".
