5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Health Book
I was quite pleased with the scope of topics covered in this book. It will make an excellent homeschool textbook.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unhealthy!
As the parent of two teen girls, I was shocked by the lack of information in this book related to safer sex practices. There is a full chapter on abstinence but nothing for those students who are already, or may become, sexually active. While it's true that abstinence is the only 100% effective way to avoid pregnancy and most STDs, it is also true that three-quarters of...

As the parent of two teen girls, I was shocked by the lack of information in this book related to safer sex practices. There is a full chapter on abstinence but nothing for those students who are already, or may become, sexually active. While it's true that abstinence is the only 100% effective way to avoid pregnancy and most STDs, it is also true that three-quarters of a million teens between 15 and 19 become pregnant each year in the US. So where is the information that those teens need to prevent AIDs and pregnancy? I don't believe that teen sex should be punishable by death as may be the case if AIDs is contracted. Furthermore, nearly a third of those teen pregnancies terminate in abortion. Abortions are 100% preventable by stopping unwanted pregnacies, yet the word "condom" is not to be found in this text! US rates of teen pregnancy are twice as high as in England and Wales or Canada, and eight times as high as in the Netherlands or Japan. A recent study found that there was a 3% increase in teen pregnacies in 2007. I'll talk to my own children about this issue because studies have shown that kids who can approach their parents about sex are more likely to abstain. To those authors of this text who call themselves health care instructors/providers, but are squeamish about addressing the needs of sexually active teens, I say, GROW UP!!
