Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered two-fer from the veteran American singer and guitar picker containing a pair of his original albums on one CD: Hey Little One and a Place in the Sun. Both originally released in 1968, these albums reached #1 in the U.S. Country charts and the Top 30 in the Pop charts. Though Glen is highly regarded as one of the great Pop and Country vocalists of the '60s and '70s, he began his professional career as an in-demand session guitarist, playing on many popular recordings by the Beach Boys and others. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Campbell handled most of the lead guitar work on his own solo albums. 22 tracks. BGO. 2009.

The songs on this CD (Which is actually two [2] vinyl albums on 1-CD) hold very special memories for me. It's wonderful to relive those times (And memories), even after all these years.

Glen Campbell in my earlier years, I used to have almost every album he made. I was sad to hear about his health. The new CD I didn't like. But since I only have one other one. I wanted to make sure I got something else. He is still Good, but with alzeimer's you never know. I wish him a long life. If possible.

First off A New Place In The Sun is one of Glen Campbell's best early records. I read in one of the other reviews that those songs were recorded earlier in his career and then were released just as his popularity was starting to go into orbit. It starts off with Freeborn Man which reminded me a little bit of Galveston with the orchestration. Then to show that he was a country singer he sang The Last Letter and She Called Me Baby. Then there is a song that he cowrote called Visions Of Sugarplums that is pretty good. He does a cover of Merle Haggard's The Legend Of Bonnie And Clyde. And I think he played guitar on Merle's origial version of that. He does a good cover of the 12th of Never. And he finishes up by showing what he would sound like as a lounge singer with Sunny Day Girl. Hey Little One was a song on the By Tne Time I get To Phoenix album. And again I think they were just trying to capitalize on his rising popularity by re releasing it and putting songs out to make another album. Theres more country songs on it Thats All That Matters and Break My Mind. And it ends with The Impossible Dream. Which I think Glen just always liked to show he could do any kind of music. Hey Little one all in all is not as good an album. But not bad.

I love both albums. Sweet, "early" style of delivery. Enough love songs to make me appreciate the beauty of his interpretation. Highlights include "Hey, Little One", "That's All That Matters", "Turn Around and Look At Me", "Woman Woman", "Visions of Sugarplums".

These two albums followed the successes of his 1967 albums Gentle on my mind and By the time I get to phoenix, which sold well and established Glen as a star, but neither of the title tracks made #1 in the American country charts although By the time I get to phoenix made #2. Both of those songs remained among Glen's most recognized songs.

In those days, it was quite normal for artists to record two or more albums each year. In those days, albums were much cheaper to record but generally sold in much smaller quantities, so it was the logical thing to do. Another aspect of those days was that artists often included plenty of cover versions among the songs intended for single release.

The first album here, Hey little one, gave Glen a country hit with the title track. The follow-up single was Dreams of the everyday housewife, which wasn't part of the album, but was included on Wichita lineman album.

As far as I can tell, no singles were released from the second album. Instead, Capitol chose to re-issue Gentle on my mind, but the re-issue was not successful. They followed this with a Bobbie Gentry duet, not included here. Despite the lack of singles, this album, like its predecessor, sold well in America. Glen Campbell had a popular TV show back then and presumably sang plenty of the songs on it, so charts and radio play weren't essential at that stage.

These albums seem largely forgotten now except by Glen Campbell fans, but there is plenty of great music in Glen's usual style.
