Can't... stop... listening...,

I missed out on My Bloody Valentine when they actually existed. I had a quite the virulent aversion to "wimpy college rock" around that time, and that was basically the only thing I knew about them, that they were a staple of college radio. (I missed out on the Pixies for the same reason.) I couldn't be bothered, I was too busy listening to scary stuff like the Melvins and the Jesus Lizard and Helmet. Now I myself have grown old and wimpy. A friend played Loveless (MBV's final and arguably best album) for me a couple of years ago and I was instantly hooked. I'd heard of shoegazer bands, but I'd never heard the term "dream-pop" until I was reading about MBV recently. I can't imagine that this term could be applied to any group more so than MBV; seemingly endless layers of melodies, harmonies and noise, flowing and cascading and intertwining through the air and into your mind... "dreamy" is definitely le mot juste. Anyway, this CD is a great low-risk introduction to their music. If you like it, you will love Loveless. To established fans, it's an absolute must... an appendix to Loveless. The Tremolo EP is definitely in the same vein, but it's just not as crucial... this is the only EP which contains the song "Glider". Most fans seem to ignore this track, but I simply cannot stop listening to it. It's an unusual instrumental, even for MBV. There are no vocal or drum tracks in the mix, only several tracks of swirling, melting, dreamy guitar and bass. It's the most beautiful sound I've heard in quite some time, and I'd be perfectly happy if it was the only track on the disk and cost 10 times as much.

Pure pop beauty in an expressionistic shell.,

Back in the early 90's, My Bloody Valentine befuddled many people with their sound, but more by far were entranced by their lush orchestral sound, somehow made only with guitars. Glider, released around the time of MBV's last album, Loveless, contains four incredible tracks, each more unforgettable than the last. Soon has been called MBV's best song, most notably by Brian Eno, who said that it "sets a new standard for pop." This was my first purchase of the Valentine catalog, and it's a good starting point for those interested in getting a taste of this influential band; the danger in this, however, is that one will not be enough. Be prepared to fall in love with My Bloody Valentine.

Despite being far less known than Loveless, this in my opinion is as good as the better known masterpiece. Musically, it sounds like a hybrid of Loveless and Isn't Anything, Loveless's predecessor. Offering a glimpse into the sound that would be explored in Loveless, it contains 2 of the loveliest songs I have ever had the pleasure of hearing(tracks 3 and 4). Get this CD at the same time as Loveless and be prepared to be jettisoned into an alternate dimension. Escapism doesnt get any more beautiful and dreamy than this.

A fantastic EP. All 4 songs are beautiful and really show what kind of music MBV made.
'Soon' is identical to the album version on 'Loveless', so you should already know it's a classic. 'Glider' is a very cool sounding "instrumental" of sorts (swirling guitar looped over and over). 'Dont Ask Why' is just a pretty song. Kevin Shields sings on it, and does a great job. 'Off Your Face' is a little faster paced and more of a mainstreamish sound for MBV, fun and dreamy. Great EP, pick it up if you're a MBV fan. You wont be sorry, in any way.

This EP was my first foray into MBV and probably why i love this release so much. I can't stand to see it sitting on the used shelf so i have bought the record and tapes, giving them away to friends. Starting off with the album version of "Soon" you wonder why this wasn't just called the Soon EP. Very representative of everything on Loveless, i can't complain. Then we get to the sound of an industrial plastics factory with "Glider". Beautifully disturbing. Kevin Shields takes a shot at the mic in one of his better songs "Don't Ask Why". The closer "Off Your Face" has a sort of New Order feel to it and was the reason i bought the album. I like this companion to Loveless and also recommend the Tremolo EP.

Pretty much along the lines of Loveless which is one of the greatest albums ever (right up there with Pet Sounds, Revolver, The STone ROses...) THe main difference between this and loveless is that they places the vocals a little higher in the mix i think, either way it sounds great!

reading Kerouac's 'On the Road' is more than enough fuel to finally make you pack your belongings into your Honda and leave that small Mid-Western city. This album is like a time capsule when spun. It fuctions as a reminder of youthful confusions, but presented in form free of mere juvenile angst. It's 'Poppy' yet quirky enough to cause discomfort to most ears. This album doesn't get old. The four tracks leave you where most Pop music fails, wanting more not less.

This EP (like most MBV EPs) was written and released prior to either of their albums. On Glider you can hear the band begin to develop their technique for out of this world "shoegaze" guitar tones, as opposed to a lot of their earlier EPs. If you're already a fan of Isn't Anything and Loveless this would be a good place to go next.

"Soon" is clearly not one of my favourites. A repetitive hollow melody that will haunt me until the end. Maybe that's the main reason why many people think "loveless" and its eps are so overrated.
But both "glider" and "tremolo" are the best introduction to this band. And sure after listening to "loveless" and "isn't anything" you will return to them. The song "glider" stands besides the most powerful instrumental classics. |
