This Gliere set of most of his major orchestral works is excellent in every regard, in presentation, accompanying notes, and performance. Gliere is mostly known for the Russian Sailors' Dance from his ballent "The Red Poppy," but he wrote three symphonies and other orchestral pieces, most reflecting the various national traditions of the peoples of Russia. Perhaps he most resembles Rimsky-Korsakov in his use of vivid orchestral color. Yet, his style is unmistakable and always a delight to the ear. Chandos is to be congratulated for putting out this 5-disc set. Highly recommended.

Here, I can only echo the sentiments of the other reviewers. Very well recorded, even brilliant. Two things, however. First, the Symphony #3 clocks in at 78 minutes. When I get a chance, I'm going to pull out my score and follow along and search for cuts. The performance here is suppose to be uncut. But, when you consider that this symphony usually clocks-in at around 90 minutes...well, it requires some research. I will update when I get a chance. Second, with the inclusion of the Horn Concerto, it is a shame Chandos did not include on a sixth disc the Coloratura Concerto and the Harp Concerto which is in its catalog.

Nonetheless, this is a set that is well worth the time and expense.

Gliere is a greatly neglected composer. I suppose his toeing of the Stalinist line in music while others (notably Prokofiev and Shostakovitch, both of whom later conformed) were getting censured and persecuted is partly responsible. But he was a masterful symphonic colorist. Especially wonderful is the version of Symphony No. 3 ("Ilya Muromets") conducted by Sir Edward Downes. This is a great (if somewhat ponderous and pretentious) work well worth performing much more often. There are a number of other performances of No. 3 available and maybe more to the liking of some listeners, but you get a lot of Gliere for your buck in this set.
