5.0 out of 5 stars Deeply Esoteric......, August 4, 2006

The art alone is reason enough to purchase this book. Without telling too much, the story centers on a group of prisoners trying to survive a war in an alternate reality. The premise is haunting and quite plausible.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY, VERY, GOOD., August 21, 2002

This review is from: Glimmer Rats (Hardcover)
THIS GRAPHIC NOVEL, ALTHOUGH ONLY 64 PAGES, DESERVES THE HIGHEST RATING BECAUSE OF IT'S CUTTING EDGE ARTWORK, AND BECAUSE IT IS ONE OF THE BEST SHORT STORIES IN MODERN SCI-FI. A SINGLE GOVERNMENT STATE EXISTS IN FUTURISTIC EUROPE. ONE MAN NAMED MADSEN IS A RESISTENCE FIGHTER AGAINST THE STATE. HE GETS CAPTURED.
THE STATE SENTENCES HIM TO DEATH AND CREATES A FAKE CGI TELEVISED IMAGE OF HIS EXECUTION. HE IS THEN SENT TO BE IN A TRAINING CAMP FOR COMBAT AGAINST AN AMAZINGLY EVIL PRESENCE THAT HAS BEEN DISCOVERED IN A DIMENSION PARALLEL TO EARTH.
EVERY "EXECUTED" PERSON IN THE LAST 6 YEARS HAS BEEN SENT TO THIS PLACE (CALLED "THE GLIMMER"), AND THE MAJORITY OF THE BOOK IS TOLD IN WELL PACED FIRST PERSON NARRATION BY MADSEN. INSIDE THE GLIMMER, MADSEN AND HIS MOTLEY TROOP ENCOUNTER "SPOOKS," THEIR NICKNAMES FOR THE LOCAL BEINGS THAT THEY FIGHT AGAINST. I SUGGEST THIS FOR FANS OF SIN CITY YARNS, AND FOR REGULAR READERS OF BOOKS LIKE "SPAWN."
THE ART IS UNIQUE AND COMPLIMENTS THE WRITING VERY WELL. ALTHOUGH THERE IS GORE HERE, AS WELL AS GUNS SO BIG NORMAL PEOPLE JUST WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO LIFT THEM, THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL VIOLENCE-AND-SHOCK GRAPHIC NOVEL, AND SOMETHING TELLS ME THAT IT WILL BE BECOMING A CLASSIC VERY SOON.
