Review

"People who enjoy a fun read for entertainment will love it. I also recommend this book to anyone who likes unusual stories about courageous women. This is the type of book that will gain momentum through word of mouth." -Judge, Writer's Digest 20th Annual Self-Published Book Awards

Glimmers begins when Paige tries on a pair of vintage boots and experiences a "glimmer" into the life of the boots' former owner. As the story progresses, Paige experiences similar glimmers when she touches objects of sentimental value to others. When I first started reading, I thought the people whose stories she experienced were going to be random, helping her to live her own life better. For example, after the first glimmer, Paige uses her experiences to improve her cooking skills. But as the story progresses, I learned that the glimmers were not random--they interconnect in a way that brings richness to the text. I won't give away any more because the fun for me was discovering how all the stories related.

I enjoyed the style of this book. First of all, it's a clean read, so there isn't anything inappropriate, and I could see a young adult reader enjoying it, too. It's written in first-person point of view in a conversational way. I enjoyed this point of view, and each glimmer kept my interest.

My least favorite was the memory of England (I won't give away details because it's important to the plot). I felt like the difference in time period and location (compared to the other glimmers) should have made the narrator's voice sound drastically different, but it didn't feel that different to me. I also wanted just a bit more depth in experiencing this important memory.

Still, I greatly enjoyed how the storylines were woven together and how each of Paige's experiences helped her improve upon or understand her own life in a more meaningful way. My favorite character was Paige's mother, who brought humor to the novel and offered a bit of comic relief.

This book was a great read. Barbara Brooke did a brilliant job developing the characters in this romantic and engaging story. I have missed the characters since finishing the book. I can't wait for Glimmers 2.

This did not look like my kind of book, but my wife enjoyed it so much that I gave it a try. In spite of myself, I found it very captivating. The transition to other lives and times was very well done, and the characters fun and believable. I even got a little verklemmt at the end.

Others have gone into long synopsis of the book, so I will try to be brief. In Chapter One, Paige drops the kids off at school and enjoys time to herself to shop for a vintage outfit that she really loves. She goes home to try it on. The last thing she puts on are these leather boots that she fell in love with. One minute she is at the kitchen sink, and the next, she is sort of falling and seeing lights. Then, for several chapters, the story is about a young girl in the 1980's who fell in love over the summer when she was working and trying to create the perfect recipe to win a blue ribbon at the state fair. I don't know if it was mentioned that Paige was viewing all of this through memories or was actually in the other person's body with them at the time. There are three stories within the main story. The third one was my absolute favorite. But, the gist of the book is that Paige can try on a very meaningful item that belonged to someone else, and can see their memories (much like the way some psychics can hold someone's personal item and do a reading off of the energy implanted in that object).

Indeed, the third memory is by far my absolute favorite! Paige's Mom brings to her her great-great-grandma's dresser drawers that came over from England and had been passed down over generations. There is a secret drawer that Paige searches for, and she finds cameo earrings. When she puts them on, she is watching and feeling her great-great-grandmother's memories sort of as they are happening. This story within a story is my favorite because it is Regency, similar to "Pride and Prejudice", only I believe that it is so much better!!!! Ms. Brooke could write that kind of book, and I would be thrilled to no end! I want her to write actual books like that.

I truly enjoyed reading Glimmers, and it pulled me in from the very start. Each "story" was wonderful and I felt connected to the different characters almost immediately. In a story that has many stories within it, it's usually quite hard to follow, but this was not. I give the author kudos for that. A few little things though. I saw some typos which is always a bit distracting when you are pulled in. Also, in my opinion, there were too many exclamation points used. Again, that was distracting at times. Most of the time, I loved the stories, the descriptions, and the dialogue, but there were instances where the it felt the dialogue was a bit forced and I didn't "buy it". Not all the time, but sometimes it just didn't feel natural. In general, the read was very young adult like (which may have been the intent, which is that case, awesome!!). If this was written for the pre-teen or teen to read, then great, mission accomplished. If the author was going for a bit of an older audience, I can see how it would turn some folks off. Personally I'll read anything from kids lit (like Diary of a Wimpy Kid), all the way to adult reads (Shades of Grey), so I was happy. It was very PG, maybe even G rated. Overall, fun to read and looking forward to more!
