I enjoyed the style of this book. First of all, it's a clean read, so there isn't anything inappropriate, and I could see a young adult reader enjoying it, too. It's written in first-person point of view in a conversational way. I enjoyed this point of view, and each glimmer kept my interest.
My least favorite was the memory of England (I won't give away details because it's important to the plot). I felt like the difference in time period and location (compared to the other glimmers) should have made the narrator's voice sound drastically different, but it didn't feel that different to me. I also wanted just a bit more depth in experiencing this important memory.
Still, I greatly enjoyed how the storylines were woven together and how each of Paige's experiences helped her improve upon or understand her own life in a more meaningful way. My favorite character was Paige's mother, who brought humor to the novel and offered a bit of comic relief.Read more ›
Indeed, the third memory is by far my absolute favorite! Paige's Mom brings to her her great-great-grandma's dresser drawers that came over from England and had been passed down over generations. There is a secret drawer that Paige searches for, and she finds cameo earrings. When she puts them on, she is watching and feeling her great-great-grandmother's memories sort of as they are happening. This story within a story is my favorite because it is Regency, similar to "Pride and Prejudice", only I believe that it is so much better!!!! Ms. Brooke could write that kind of book, and I would be thrilled to no end! I want her to write actual books like that.Read more ›
GLIMMERS is the first novel in a new series by Barbara Brooke. Written in the fantasy genre, GLIMMERS follows Paige as she struggles with her new found ability to read memories from the past.
Paige is married, the mother of 2 and living a normal life in the suburbs. Her weakness for consignment goods (ala 1980's ankle boots) will find her locked into the memory of a young woman experiencing her first love and loss, and the heartbreak of knowing she wasn't good enough. As the previous owner of the books, Delilah's memories will take Paige through the summer of 1988, working at a resort lodge, where she meets William, the son of a DC politician and socialite mother. But by the time summer vacation is drawing to a close, Delilah knows that there will be no future with William and embarks on a heartbreaking series of events to ensure that William is no longer a part of her life.
Paige has no explanation for her sudden ability to experience the memories of someone else. And the most confusing side-effect, Paige is now able to cook like a gourmet chef!!!! Didn't Delilah have hopes and dreams of one day opening a French style restaurant? Not realizing why or how this has occurred, she tries to proceed as usual but the vivid memories continue to haunt. When she finally confesses to her husband Elliot, he is concerned that perhaps his wife is ill, but her determination to prove that Delilah exists will take both she and Elliot on a surfing safari through the internet-but with no luck.
Hailey is Paige's younger sister. About to marry Derek, Paige has agreed to help Hailey, including picking up her engagement ring from the jewelers.Read more ›

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't too plausible. The characters were likable, but not developed enough. I enjoyed going back in time in the book, and it was easy enough to follow. Read morePublished 11 months ago by Holly Reeves

The first few chapters of Barbara Brooke's Glimmers were on the "iffy" side, for me. I was distracted by various and sundry syntax, tense and sentence structure issues. Read morePublished 12 months ago by joannd
