Book Description

“Save them, Dean. Save them all....”

Dean Curse avoids attention the way his best friend Colin avoids common sense. Which is why he isn’t happy about being Abbotsford’s latest local hero – having saved the life of a stranger, he is now front page news. Dean’s reason for avoiding the limelight? Ever since his heroic act, he’s been having terrifying visions of people dying and they’re freaking him out so badly his psychologist father just might have him committed. Dean wants nothing more than to lay low and let life get back to normal.

But when Dean’s visions start to come true, and people really start dying, he has to race against the clock – literally – to figure out what’s happening. Is this power of premonition a curse? Or is Dean gifted with the ability to save people from horrible fates? The answer will be the difference between life and death.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling April 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Glimpse is a gripping mystery thriller that grabbed the attention from the start to the end. While this is a recognizable scenario of a group of kids who are thick as thieves as they attempt to understand the trouble that Dean has gotten himself into, it is also a complex mystery.

The addition of a typically brother intolerant sister an over protective mother and a father who clearly brings home his work add to the scene setting and give the story additional depth and meaning.

The author has created an excellent adventure that plays out in unexpected and unusual ways.

5.0 out of 5 stars "He's A Hero and Doesn't Know It" April 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
OMGosh! I love this story! I read the entire story in two sittings. I could not put it down and it was so well written and edited that I cruised swiftly through it. Steven Whibley has made his mark as an excellent author. Dean Curse is a young boy who was once ordinary. He loved soccer, comic books, the Survivor TV show, but then he finds out, unfortunately, that he is really cursed! Well, that's what his buddy, Collin, keeps telling him. He's almost 14 years old when his life begins to change. He has a younger sister, Becky, 11 years old, who he thinks is really weird with her new hobby of collecting bugs! (Now, really, I used to do that when I was a kid! Does that make me weird, too? VBG) Anyway, Dean doesn't want to wait for his mom to take him to school, so he heads out alone, taking a shortcut in an alley behind a mall. He is stopped in his tracks when he sees two men beating up a man covered in blood. He makes believe he's talking into a cell phone and the perpetrators run off. Before help arrives, the injured man grabs his arm, splattering blood on his clean t-shirt, and mumbles one word before passing out: GLIMPSE! Very soon, Dean starts having visions of scary looking people at home and at school. Is it a curse, or is it a gift? Whatever it is...has scared the heck out of Dean. What a creative, haunting story that will definitely entertain everyone, young or old, who reads it. I'm ready for the next sequel! A definite, high-five to Author Steven Whibley!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable story! April 18, 2013
By A.
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was incredibly easy to get into which is just what I needed. The last few books I've read lately have been a bit slow going and I had a hard time getting into them. Not true with this book. You could pick it up and easily fall into place with it. I'd pick it up to read a few chapters and find myself reading huge chucks of the story. I didn't want to put the book down. I needed to know what was going to happen. The pacing of the story was great. It moved along very smoothly. I didn't feel rushed to move on to the next aspect of the story.

I initially was a bit worried that the book was going to be a bit dull. The premise sounded interesting but that type of story has been done. I ended up pleasantly surprised at the twists and turns. Not what I was expecting at all. I'm definitely interested in seeing how things in this world play out. There are a lot of unanswered questions and mysteries out there.

Dean was very likable. He did feel like a teenage boy and not an adult pretending to be a teenage boy. I always appreciate the characters who do the hero thing because they have to and not because they want to or they want the attention. The banter with his friends and sister was very true to life and enjoyable.

The bottom line? Very enjoyable story!

I loved this book! A unique premise, a great cast of characters, and twists you don't see coming add up to a fast and furious read. I am looking forward to book 2, and whatever else he writes.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I've Read in Some Time July 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Glimpse starts off intriguing (the first words are, "I'm cursed."). And the intrigue continues all the way to the very end of the book. The whole way through the book, the reader is taken on the same roller coaster ride as Dean and his friends, trying to make sense of his "curse."

When we're finally able to make sense of it, we're still kept on the ride of how the curse is going to play out in Dean's life. And the stakes only get higher and higher, as the curse manifests closer and closer to home. The way the author gets the reader more and more invested is awesome. Well-done!

The book is also witty from the get-go. The way Dean and his sister always bicker is entertaining. (Of course, when my kids bicker that way, it's just plain annoying, but I can tolerate it in a book, especially when it's witty.)

So in Glimpse we find an excellent amount of intrigue and just enough humour.

One thing we don't find is romance. Nor vulgarity, raunchiness, and grossness.

And that, too, is one of the highlights. It's so hard to find a book that isn't sending kids the message that the purpose of life is impressing boys (if you're a girl) and impressing girls (if you're a boy), or being as materialistic as possible (if you're a girl) or as gross as possible (if you're a boy).

Glimpse has none of that. It's a story of adventure, friendship, and eventually heroism. Perfect.

It even has a sentimental moment in the end that actually had my eye tearing up as I read it.

I read this book for two reasons: 1) for my own entertainment, and 2) to see if it has enough value and entertainment to be worth recommending to my kids.
