2.0 out of 5 stars Romance was too rushed, September 14, 2006

This review is from: A Glimpse of Forever (Timeswept) (Paperback)
From the back cover:

The Seer...

Her wagon train stranded on the Spanish Trail, pioneer Abby Wynne searched the heavens for rain. Gifted with visionary powers, Abby sensed a man in another time gazing at the same night sky. But even she could not forsee that she would journey to the future and into the arms of her soul mate.

The Stargazer...

Widower Mike Danziger had escaped the L.A. lights for the Painted Desert, but nothing prepared him for a beauty as radiant as the doe-eyed woman he found. His intellect couldn't accept her incredible story, but her warm kiss eased the longing in his heart.

A Glimpse Of Forever...

Caught between two eras bridged only by their love, Mike and Abby fought to stay together, even as the past beckoned Abby back to save those trapped on the trail. Was their passsion a destiny written in the stars, or only a fleeting glimpse of paradise?

And my review:

The time-travel aspect of this book was quite well done. Since most time-travel stories involve a character going into the past (where they at least have an idea of how things work), this one was a story where the heroine travelled into the future. Unlike some writers who attempt time-travel romance, she had a compelling explanation as to how the heroine had travelled through time (something that is often annoyingly vague in other time-travel books).

The author did a good job of showing Abby's fascination with our time. Many time-travel books have a character travel through time and then just accept it as if such an occurance is no big deal. That wasn't the case here, much to my enjoyment. It also made me appreciate how much easier we have things now, like hot running water and electricity, as well as grocery stores, indoor plumbing, cars, antibiotics....well, the list goes on.

However, I felt that the romance aspect of this book was very rushed and weak. When it was in its earliest stages, just starting to develop, the time felt right for the hero and heroine to have their first kiss. Instead, they end up having sex. I felt so cheated by this. First of all, they barely knew each other (especially considering how standoffish the hero was) and secondly, the heroine was a proper woman from 1858! No way would a sheltered virgin from that era just spread her legs for a man who's practically a stranger with no hint of commitment. It was just too out of character.

After that, I lost interest in the story. There was a mystery plot, but I didn't care enough about it to bother finishing the book. I read romance for the love story, and this one was a big disappointment.
