Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Steve Weeks on March 27, 2002
Format: Audio CD
I bought this recording on cassette tape in 1987 after one of the local jazz stations gave considerable airplay to "johnny cat," probably the most commercial song among the listings. The album quickly became one of my favorites, and I have been a huge Vital Information fan ever since. Trust me, this is their best recording. I would venture to say that "Blues to Baphe 1" is my favorite individual jazz song of all time. It's the kind of song that would never make it to "smooth jazz" radio, but has a haunting attitude with great guitar and sax solos. The rock roots of Tom Coster and Steve Smith really shine through on this effort.

Such a great album this is. I bought it on LP and saw the tour in Austin, TX at the Liberty Lunch when it was open. 3/18/87 Place was Half full..not good for the band sadly but basically sat up next the stage..Didn't Know who was Frank Gamble at that point..I did after no doubt. that show along with Allan Holdsworth there stands out to this day as some of the best. A must have album along with the first Vital Info album.

Truly one of the greatest 'modern' jazz albums. The album is filled with with wonderfully energetic music. 'Johnny Cat', the song that has gotten air time in local San Francisco Bay Area radio stations was the most popular song, but moody songs like 'In a Low Voice' really show the talents of these well known artists in this genre. I just hit the repeat button for hours to listen to my favorite song on this CD: 'Novato'. Steve Smith is amazingly talented and the talent that he assembles for this album is most impressive.
