Oh, sometimes I try new things even though I don't actually want to keep them or need them just to see what technology has come up with while I was asleep. Well, one of the latest was this Global New Beginnings DV-136ZB 1.5" 3.1 MP Digital Video Camera with 4X Zoom. It was a whopping $18 and change, so I got it from Amazon and ran it through it's paces. Very light and easy to use and fits in a shirt pocket, uses SD cards for storage and comes with charger, USB and AV cables. Out to produce my videographically acclaimable Hollywood movie. OK, just to see what an $18 video cam can do. Actually, it worked right out of the box after installing batteries and it did take video. Zoom was slow and in steps rather than continuous and is digital so at the longest was rather grainy and unfocused. As for the quality...what do you expect for an $18 video cam? I would say good start for a pre adolescent to get acquanted with videography or for logging of your kids sports endeavors but NOT if you want memories of distant ports of call to reminisce in your later years. The resolution is not what you would call...terrific, but you can identify easily what was taken and it's wildly affordable. All in all, if you want a video cam for under $20 just to fool around with and teach the young ones the ropes then this would be a good start.

I did quite a bit of research before deciding on this camera for my daughter. She's too young for something expensive. I watched videos of this camera at work and read a lot of reviews. I didn't expect a lot for the price, but I did expect it to work. The sound doesn't work and it goes through batteries like crazy. Don't waste your money. (And seller tells me I need to contact the manufacturer regarding the problems. I will probably try, but I don't expect much).

Very good review of this quality camera. In the video Dave Jones from the popular EEVBlog tears this camera down to the bear parts.

For the price, it's okay. However, the white balance is s***. Indoors it is terrible quality. Outside, it's fine. Also, the internal microphone sounds worse than most cell phone cameras. But, for the money I paid, it's a decent camera.
