This is an commercial product packaged for contractors, not do-it-yourself-ers. Contractors don't need instructions so they don't waste the paper. The one sold at retail hardware stores is easier and more user friendly, but for me, the wrong shape and harder to install because it's already got the tension set. You have to fight to keep it open while installing it.

Hanging a new door and routing out the space for the hinge is beyond my skills. I was replacing original equipment so all I had to do was unscrew the old hinge and replace it with this one.

To Install as a replacement: Locate the hex opening on one end of the hinge. There will be an opening on that same end with several holes. There will be no tension at first. My door had two so I replaced both. On the top hinge, I have the hex opening pointing down, and on the bottom hinge, its pointing up. That just made it easier for me but it doesn't matter really.

To set the tension: place the hex wrench provided in the hole and turn until you feel slight resistance. Either use the long pin, or one of the short pins and as you turn the hex wrench, place the pin in the last hole. The short pins should fit flush with the hinge. If some sticks out, turn the hex wrench a little more and reset the pin.

Open the door and see if it moves. On my first attempt, the spring was set in the wrong direction and it actually opened the door a bit. If this happens, turn the hex wrench until the pin is loose then slowly release the tension until you can start turning the hex wrench in the other direction.

IF you are replacing two hinges at the same time, once you've determined the direction for the top one, release the pin so you can test the bottom one independently. On my first attempt, the top hinge was trying to open the door while the bottom hinge was trying to close the door. There was a lot of tension but it wasn't doing anything!

In my case, the hinges were on the right side of the door, the top hinge turned right to add tension, the bottom turned left to add tension.

Once you have determined the correct direction for both hinges, set the short pins with barely enough tension at first, then open the door and see if it shuts completely. Add a small amount of tension to both hinges evenly until the door shuts. Don't try to add too much tension or you'll blow the springs or cause the door to shut with too much power. It just needs to close gently.

As far as I can tell, there are two short pins because they're easy to drop and lose. You only need one. Even the long pin isn't needed but I guess they hope the contractor can keep that in his pocket. If I had to install a lot of these, the little pins would be a pain.

The Global CPS4040-R-US4-M Mortise Spring Hinge does not come with installation instructions. I sent an e-mail to the manufacturer, ([...]), and they did reply with a scanned .pdf of the installation instructions.

The instructions that were sent suggest using the tension rod that is included to wind the spring to increase tension. After a few turns you will bend or break the tension rod. I suggest that you use the included hex key that also shipped with the hinge, even though there is no mention of the hex key in the instructions. The hex key fits in the top of the hinge and is much easier to turn if you need a lot of tension on the spring.

The one mortise spring hinge I purchased does not provide enough closing power to make the fire door leading to my garage truly self-closing. I will order another hinge to see if two will be enough to make the door self-closing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Long Pins?, April 2, 2007
All was fine except I didn't know how to apply the long pins that came in the package. There were no instructions. I put the pins in the pin holes and they were unsightly. My wife did not like them sticking out as they did, so I had to make my own small pins to put into the pin holes.

5.0 out of 5 stars just works - instructions link here, July 7, 2011
This review is from: Global CPS4040-R-US4-M Commercial Grade Full Mortise Spring Hinge, Satin Brass (Tools & Home Improvement)
Instructions: <...>

I ordered 2 of these for my backyard door. I was tired of closing the door for my dogs to come back in. Installation is only slightly more complicated than a standard hinge as you have to tension the spring for it to work. Just know that these hinges CLOSE doors not open them. If you over tension the springs, you may break them when you open the door. The maximum strength applied by the hinge is also based on the maximum swing, 2 slots for 180 degree openings, 3 for 90 degree openings. For my door, which again is to my backyard and not too heavy, it took 2 hinges to close the door completely.

Our new office has a bathroom door that's not hung right, just tilts out a little bit from a well balanced vertical, and thus the door always ends up "falling open" if the door isn't shut tight. I had mistakenly thought, for just this tiny little out of balance issue, that this might do the trick, since it's just an interior door, with no wind or anything to interfere. But this made no impact whatsoever on the door. I'll probably have to get two more and replace all three hinges in the hopes that will be enough to just hold it still, and keep it from slowly creeping open all the time.
There is not a lot of flexibility with the settings, and the spring was as tight as it could go with just a few partial turns with the allen wrench. So if you get these, I'd over-estimate how many you'll need rather than underestimate. But in hindsight, it makes sense because let's face it, how much power and torque will they get with such a tiny little spring in such a tiny area?

Other than that, it is a nice, solid unit, looks to be pretty well designed. Comes with two types of screws to mount it with, depending on the application. As others have said, there's no instructions with it, but it's clearly obvious how it should work, so should not have any issues due to the lack of documentation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Global Spring Hinge, May 29, 2011

Great product -- the best I've found. I only needed one for metal exterior doors (they take the 8-screw model), but I needed two for the wooden entry door. All the interior doors needed only one. best way I've found to remember how to adjust the spring: With the hex nut facing up (that's the nut the Allen wrench fits in to adjust the spring), turn the nut clockwise. Insert the retaining pin in the exposed hole furthest to the right and test the tension. Tighten or loosen again until you've got what you want.

This review is for Amazon as much as for this hinge. Amazon makes me a more informed consumer because of the excellent user reviews available and wide variety of competing products to compare against. I find I'm writing all 5 star reviews for my purchases because I know what I'm buying before it arives and since I know what limitations to expect, the purchases invariably completely meet my expectations.

This hinge is no exception. My office is a room in my garage. Everyone who enters leaves the door open and thus the heat from my space heater would quickly be replaced by outside air. Envisioning the necessarily solution I turned to Amazon and quickly found this hinge, read the reviews and added it to my next free shipping order. The reviews made it simple to know what to do for successful installation (given the anticipated no manual included) and my door now gently closes behind everyone who enters. I couldn't be happier.

I also noticed that the hex wrench tends to easily deform the socket. Likely it's assumed it will only need to be used a couple times at most and softer metal was chosen for cost savings. Would be my guess. But the brass hinge itself appears to be solid as one would expect. No complaints.

Easy to install. Sturdy with adjustable tension. I bought two and have them set so the don't crush kid fingers. It doesn't quite latch, but I don't have doors standing wide open in 100 degree heat. I've messed with the tension several times to get it the way I want. I have just one per door.

This is a very good product, but there is no instructions, but id you are littel bit handy and think, you will know how to put tension on it. Be careful while putting tension. You may strip hex head. It happen to me once. Metal is soft so it can be stripped easily.
