3.0 out of 5 stars A Funky Party!, June 25, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Global Gumbo (Audio CD)
Go see The Baboons for a funky party! I see them play Tobacco Road in Miami and love the sultry girl on microphone. The album needs more photos or multi-media video to convey how [hot] the girl singing is. ....

Musicanship is very good. The lead singer is a cutie but needs help on mic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Global Gumbo as fun as a night on South Beach, February 26, 2001

This review is from: Global Gumbo (Audio CD)
Take a healthy dose of Afrocuban rhythms, a pinch of reggae and New Orleans parade music, some Middle Eastern spices and a whole lot of funk and mix it all together and you've got Global Gumbo. The Baboons are the perfect representation of Miami, and Global Gumbo captures the sun & fun vibe of their live shows on South Beach. While songs like "Esta No Lleva Bata" and "Things that go Funk" are likely to give you happy feet, originals like "Witness" and "1969 (Childhood Memories)" are richer and cut deeper. "Retrospect" is a gorgeous reggae love song, while "Read Between the Lines" constantly shifts rhythms over vocalist Majica's spiritually uplifting lyrics. Their funked up versions of Duke Ellington's "Blue Pepper (Far East of the Blues"), the old Cuban standard "Bruca Manigua," and Jimi Hendrix's "1983...a Merman I should Turn to Be" display an insanely wide range of influences. Still, it all winds up sounding surprisingly cohesive. Overall, Global Gumbo is the freshest album I've heard since Santana's Supernatural.
