Well-written, mix of careful wording and high-pace story-telling, September 28, 2011
This review is from: Global M & a Tango (Hardcover)
Having worked at Oracle, a company that by now masters the art and science of acquisitions, I had high expectations of Trompenaars' book M&A Tango. These expectations were more than met. I found the book to be very insightful as well as pleasant to read. This is a characteristic of all the books that Trompenaars authored. Well written and a mix of careful wording and high-pace story telling.
As to be expected from the world's foremost authority on management dilemma's, M&A tango presents a number of dilemmas that managers face when going through an M&A process. These dilemmas span the "now vs later", the "you vs me" and the "this vs that" (classification not Trompenaars, but my own). There are few areas in business where dilemmas are both so visible and urgent as in M&A processes. There is not only theory in the book, but it is full of real-life examples and case studies.
Trompenaars tends to focus on the "soft" side, such as culture, value and behaviors. But he presents these soft factors as tangible and structured as the "hard factors" such as finance. Trompenaars presents us with concrete instruments such as the Organization Value Profiler and the Personal Values Profiler.
If, as a reviewer, I should point out one bit of criticism, it would be that the structure of 10 steps in a 3 phase framework is not very original and gives away Trompenaars' extensive background in consulting.
