Book Description

November 22, 2007 0566087065 978-0566087066
Ongoing research shows that whilst 90 per cent of large companies are conducting global projects to take advantage of distributed skills, around-the-clock operations and virtual team environments, less than one third of them have effective, established practices to help project managers and team members working over a distance. As a consequence, most organizations struggle to reach the required levels of quality and effectiveness from these projects because their methods and practices are not adapted to a global multi-cultural environment, where most communication is in writing and asynchronous. "Global Project Management" describes how to adapt your organization and your projects to thrive in this environment. The book goes beyond the recommendations on collaborative tools, to suggest the development of best practices on cross-cultural team management and global communication, recommend organizational changes and project structures, and propose alternatives for the implementation of the new practices and methods. The text is filled with real-life examples and techniques and illustrates how to apply the recommendations as part of the successful management of any global project.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'What makes global projects succeed? Do you wonder why some generic projects are perfectly managed and delivered in some countries and not even understood in others when the project scope and communication were exactly the same? If you're looking for solid, easy-to-follow advice on cross-cultural collaboration, coaching over distance, global communication, organizations, tools and more, then this is the book for you! I have been managing projects for over 13 years, developing telecommunication solutions all over the world. Before even completing 3 chapters, I was entirely engrossed in this book as it was describing exactly what I experience and was clearly explaining why some projects fail and why some succeed. This book is definitely a must-have for any Project Management professional.' -- Fabien Niget, Orange Business Services, Outsourcing Services Program Office, Switzerland

'With a refreshing sense of pragmatism, and a methodical approach of key concepts, Jean Binder cuts through the complexity of Global Project Management issues. This book deals with most of the situations I've had to face as a Global Project Manager, and gives easy-to-implement techniques and hints to solve issues and improve best practices. I'm sure you'll benefit from the time saved thanks to its effectiveness.'

- Jacob Marchal, R&D Project Manager, Alcatel-Lucent 'This book is recommended for academic law libraries with European Union, international law, or comprehensive labor and employment law collections. In addition, practitioners with multinational employment law practices will appreciate its coverage of the advances in age discrimination law in the EU and UK.' -- Legal Information Alert (USA) May 2007

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful help to manage global projects, May 15, 2009
This review is from: Global Project Management: Communication, Collaboration and Management Across Borders (Hardcover)
In a global world, software development projects concern more and more people working in various locations or coming from different organizations and culture. Managing these projects requires thinking beyond the traditional project management techniques to integrate these additional global dimensions and deal with the new issues that they create. This book helps project managers to think about this situation by proposing a detailed framework dealing with the team, communication, organization, tools and techniques dimensions of global projects. Every chapter has a good balance between conceptual material and real life examples. Many checklists and models are proposed to help assessing the global aspects of specific situations. The author invites also the reader to think how the current topic is handled in his organization. Finally, the book provides many pointers to additional literature that could help a reader to get more knowledge on a particular topic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Global Project Management bible!, March 20, 2009
This review is from: Global Project Management: Communication, Collaboration and Management Across Borders (Hardcover)
Jean Binder engages the fundamental issues Project Manager's encounter when your office walls rest on the 4-corners of the globe. This is international Project Management at its best, reining in complex/massive issues in a manner that is reliable, predicable and business process as it should be.

This is a how-to book illustrating what works from applied time-honored practices to forward-thinking advances.

It is no wonder that this book won Project Management Institute's (PMI) "David Cleland Project Management Literature Award 2008". Read more by visiting the website highlighting this growing topic and guidebook:
