5.0 out of 5 stars Soul is not just an American phenomenon, February 6, 2003
This review is from: Global Soul (Audio CD)
This album is a collection of contemporary Soul and R&B from around the world. The music is good for listening and the beats are good for dancing. Most of the artists are African Diaspora living in Europe, Africa, and South America. The same kind of quality and innovation international artists like Alpha Blondie bring to Reggae, these artists are bringing to soul. I particularly like 'Kaissa' from Cameroon and 'China' from France.
This is 'Globalization' at its best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD -- check out Cameroonian songtress Kaïssa!, June 21, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Global Soul (Audio CD)
This a great CD I picked up after hearing Kaïssa's Duala version of 'Superstar' from Jazzhole's "Circle of the Sun" album on WERS in Boston. Kaïssa is an immensely talented singer from Cameroon working and performing in New York, sometimes with Jazzhole, sometimes solo. Leave it to Putamayo to compile such a diverse collection of amazing, independent artists! Don't miss this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Change of Pace, February 22, 2003

This Cd is of a nice change of pace. These are for the most part sweet R&B songs with some hip-hop elements thrown in for good measure from various corners of the globe. The song by Tasha, "Beyond the Ocean" is an especially sweet love song done in Korean with some English thrown in. "Mon Peau" is also quite lovely too, and the bonus is that this collection features English transaltions in the liner notes for th monolingual. Some of the foreign tunes that are heavily hip hop oriented may not be to everyone's taste, but as a whole, this is a worhtwhile purchase for the adventurous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soulful Globe, November 13, 2003
This review is from: Global Soul (Audio CD)
I enjoy this cd very much and listen to it often. It's an easy listen and even though I do not speak the languages, the groove is undeniably universal and powerful. I plan to share this as presents for family all over, including Australia, Jamaica, England.....this music sends me places I haven't been and brings back rhythmic memories of many places I have.

I heard this CD when I was working at th SF Zoo and it really put me and the other patrons ready to discover the world. The music and sounds from around the world had something for everyone, even the animals. I am giving this a gifts to my jazz friends and family who I am sure will be playing this as much as I do and as loudly as I do

I generally like the Putumayo cds, and this one is no different. It has a nice mix of R&B/soul (with a little hip hop and funk through in for good measure). Putumayo has gotten much better about annotating the music. The accompanying booklet has a picture of each artist, the country, a brief description of the artist, and a translation of a few keys lines of lyrics. I particularly liked TID's song Zeze. Highly recommended.

I was at the Field Museum gift shop in Chicago and after grooving to the music they were playing for the 20 minutes I was in the store I stopped and asked what it was. It was Global Soul. This album has undeniable funk that is smooth and mellow but at the same time will groove you enough you can motivate. Global Soul is the perfect blend of the perfect grooves.
