Book Description

September 4, 2008 041577246X 978-0415772464 2

Global Terrorism 2nd edition continues to provide students with the most comprehensive introduction to terrorism as a global phenomenon. It introduces students to history, politics, ideologies and strategies of both contemporary and older terrorist groups.

Written in a clear and accessible style, each chapter explains a different aspect of terrorism and illustrates this with a wide variety of detailed case studies from across the world. Although the focus is on the contemporary, the book also includes discussion of older terrorist groups.

Building on the strengths of the first edition, this edition includes new material on:

  • July 7 attacks in London
  • Bali bombings
  • domestic terrorism in Columbia
  • attacks in Iraq
  • Al Qaeda, the Tamil Tigers, the IRA
  • animal rights extremism

The unique combination of a genuinely historical focus and truly global coverage makes this an ideal introductory textbook for anyone studying terrorism.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good content review, but not easy to read, December 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Global Terrorism (Paperback)
I purchased this book for a class on terrorism at my local university. Although this was the first book I have read over the subject, I wanted to provide my review for it.

The good:

The book covers many topics, and does so in a relatively thorough fashion. There are good case studies in each chapter that highlight the specific topics covered there.

The bad:

The majority of the book seems like a very long, drawn out read. There are only a few graphics, and almost every page is solid text, with no "empty space" left. While different topics are separated, and there is a decent flow between them, I found myself having to force myself to read each chapter to its conclusion. There are also several pages (more than a dozen, but I didn't count them out) that have many spelling or grammatical errors (verb tense, etc). This may be picky, but for a text used in a senior level course at a university (and for a second edition), I felt this was a bit much.

Overall, I would suggest looking at other books before you get this one. It's not horrible, but I hope there are better ones out there.
