5.0 out of 5 stars Undeniable Double Mix-CD Set
Like the DJ Kicks Series, the Global Underground collection is a near can't miss for underground electronica. Nick Warren drops and flows through progressive trance, techno, ethno, electro, and acid house with grace and ease...the beats and loops are diverse, eclectic, and infectious. 2.0 out of 5 stars Thankfully Nick Warren Left This Genre Behind
This is Nick Warren's second release for Global Underground. I hate to be the spoiler in a perfect 5 star rating from previous reviewers...but this is by far his worst compilation under this label.

Don't get me wrong, I think Nick Warren is the greatest DJ on the planet. Even for his versatility alone. I just never cared for this phase in his brilliant...

5.0 out of 5 stars An aural soundscape for the ages...., May 3, 2000
By
This review is from: Global Underground: 008 Brazil (Audio CD)
The first disc of this set I found to be a bit repetitive and boring.

The second disc, however - I don't think I've ever heard a CD as good as this one. Warren takes us on a journey from the first beat of the first track right up until the end, and along the way we hear everything from eastern sounding instruments on Madagascar's "Your Beautiful" to exotic chanting on Voices of Khawan's "Ya Yea Yo Yo Ma" to hard sounding synths in Forth's "Reality Detached" and gorgeous vocals in Tekara's "Breath In You". This disc has it all, the perfect build up and peaks that can make listening to this disc while driving a near hazardous experience :)

Bottom line here is that your paying for a 2CD set even though there's only one disc here that's really worth bothering with - but its sooooo unbelievably good that it makes the price very well worth it. The only thing I've heard that even comes close is Sasha's Global Underground Ibiza album.

5.0 out of 5 stars He is one of the best i've heard-beyond all doubt, June 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Global Underground: 008 Brazil (Audio CD)
Quite possibly the best G.U.cd made. While listening to this I found myself sitting with my eyes closed and just feeling the sounds that Warren puts through his equipment. More than often I was saying wow that was cool or my friends would say "holy! how'd he do that?" Amazed at how well he moves through songs that no one else has. He can toy with people's emotions and feelings as well as their bodies at whatever club he's at. Until you've seen a few hundred people dancing and cheering when you play one of his songs you'll never know what I mean. When he gets moving his album takes control and you hear the voices screaming in the tunes you can feel what he's thinking. Faster and faster the music builds up in speed and sound till Nick introduces you to a whole new area of feeling with his music. This one is one that'll stay in my hands for a while.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff from The GU resident, July 7, 2001

Nick Warren has released a couple of Global Underground albums, but this one qualifies as my personal favourite. This two CD set is a great introduction to deep and alternative house as well as the great sound of break beats etc. Warren's mixing technique varies from long streched cross-over to only mixing a couple of bars. This makes the whole CD feel varied and diverse. The first CD starts out with "Marching Powder", a great track which pinpoints the feel of Brazil directly. The next most notable track is E Razor's "India". This is pure deep house joy. This track is truly mesmerizing, but awfully short. The following track, "All I am" is also great. Then Warren lets us cruise, with tracks like "Rise and Fall" and "Tequila Flange". All the calm, tasty beats are suddenly interrupted by the heavy drum solo in the middle of "New Sunset". This is by far the GREATEST part of the CD. Then it's back to cruising with the quaint "No one in the world". A track that truly stands out is "Tide Protaxis", a great track that really touches off the deep spot. The beats and the depth is suddenly interrupted by Pob's remix of "Northern Lights", a great joyful track that'll have you shaking it in no time. The first CD is then finished off with VFR's "Tranceilusion", which serves as a great finish to the wonderful first CD.

The Second CD starts off with break beats galore. This is a great change from the monotonous straight beats. "Psychout thing", "You're beautiful" and "Kill city" are truly marvelous tracks. After the break beats comes the biggest dissapointment of the whole compilation. One has to listen when Nalin & Kane absolutely hack up "Cafe del Mar" into a pathetic mess, rid of its former dignity. This remix is badly placed and it really... Sucks. Thankfully Warren saves the day with Tekara's "Breathe in Dub". The rest of the CD goes great, great mixing and great tracks. The funky "Equilibrium", the tripped up "Indica" and "Pressure". But the last track is an instant gratifyer, it makes you forget the Del Mar fiasco. Pob's "Boiler" shows Warren's ability to supply great diverse tracks doubled with solid mixing.

Buy this CD, it's something different and eventhough it's getting old, it sure doesn't feel like it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not too shabby, February 8, 2001
This review is from: Global Underground: 008 Brazil (Audio CD)
This particular album aint too shabby. Though I am not an especially large fan of Nick Warren, I own this CD and his GU Budapest CD. Personally I feel that his Budapest CD is a little better than this one. This album is pretty good. The second cd in this album is pretty trancey and I think it's quite a bit than the first one. The first one is slower and more repetitive so that one got boring somewhat quickly, then again, I basically have ADD so that doesn't say much. The first CD picks up around midway through and it keeps going till the end. The second cd is a mover the whole way through. If I had to put this CD into some sort of a category for when it is best, I would go have to say that this CD can be best enjoyed on a long car ride because you really need to hear the whole disc in order to really like it. I hope y'allfound this review helpful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat of a disparity in the CDs but...., August 28, 2000
This review is from: Global Underground: 008 Brazil (Audio CD)
CD2 is Outstanding. CD1 is mediocre at best. This said, I really appreciate Nick Warren's style. Ive been on the Oakenfold bandwagon for a while and I decided to try out Warren and I immediately noticed some differences. His mixing is somewhat more aggresive than Oakie and somewhat quicker. You dont hear the beginning of the next song like 2 minutes from the end of the prior song. I have no idea why Cafe Del Mar (or why its ALSO ON live in pargue) is on this album but the rest of the songs on CD2 are great: exciting music but not overdone. This is certainly one of my favorites in the Global Underground Set: Warren is an accessible DJ, he stays away from the really dark trance that has made, in my opinion, Sasha and Digweed somewhat unpalatable anymore. 5 stars for CD2 (Random Comment: Your Beautiful is a really fun fun song) 3for CD1. A decent album. Get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing trip, December 20, 2001
This review is from: Global Underground: 008 Brazil (Audio CD)
I'm in full agreement with the others who have reviewed this double-CD that disc 2 is by far the better and worth the price alone. Personally, I find Disc 2 of Brazil to be the most dazzling auditory journey I've ever been on. No matter how many times I hear it, I still find myself amazed by the distance it travels, the changes, the climaxes leading to new beginnings leading to different sounds and more climaxes. Freaking brilliant! Not that Disc 1 is bad - - I would give it 3 or 4 stars alone, but because #2 is so incredible, the overall effect is a solid 5 stars. It's the closest experience I've had to being at a rave while merely listening in my car or at home because of the emotional roller coaster it takes you on. Those lucky Brazilians!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, January 19, 2001

This CD was my first trance purchase, based on the great reviews it got from others who had the privilege to "experience" this CD. I had high expecatations for the CD and I wasnt dissapointed, in fact I was pleasantly suprised to find that, indeed, despite what past reviews say, CD1 is just as good, if not better, than CD2 - either way, i dont think nick warren intended for the consumer to make such a distinction - the two CD's as a whole are great. Slow, moody beats build into an beautiful array of sounds that need to be heard again and again. Often, bigger beats seem to smoothly flow into slower more enthralling sounds. techno isnt big where im from. i recently brought this CD to school - after asking for a listen at least a dozen or so kids were begging to burn the CD - and they had never even heard of trance. this is good stuff. great stuff. and you cant go wrong paying less than 20 bucks for over 20 songs. but thats hardly a consideration. the bottom line is that this CD seriously kicks ass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Trance., September 15, 2001

This album has got to be one of the best Global Underground releases to date. The tracks are so energetic and infectious. All of the sets are wonderfully done and are so unique the minute you hear any one of them you will immediately know it is Nick Warren. GU:008 Brazil and GU:013 Ibiza are my two most highly recommended releases from the Global Underground series-and that is saying something because all of the releases in the series are high-water marks. If you like Trance, Techno or electronic music in general, you should buy this album. You will love it!

My first taste of the global underground series was Sasha's Ibiza set. It had fresh tracks and seamless mixing that I thought could not be duplicated. Man was I wrong. This CD has everything, great tracks and flawless mixing. Warren certainly knows his stuff and this album is perfect whether you like to dance or just relax to it. I love the album and I play it every day. Both CDs are excellent and neither one is better than the other. Even though some may say Cafe Del Mar by Energy 52 is too old or played out, it goes perfectly in this set and it will never let you down. Get this CD now!
