Review
The Global Village of Dentistry is a much needed and useful reference book now that knowledge of dental informatics is becoming a vital part of everyday life for dental students, as well as the practicing professional. ... The authors, who are experts in their respective fields, are to be congratulated for producing this valuable publication. ... In the near future, with the development of telemedicine and video conferencing, the whole image of teaching and most particulary of continuing education will change completely. This will also change the curricula of dental schools and the whole concept of university teaching. ... While waiting for these changes, one has to become familiar with and use existing technologies. For this reason, this book is recommended to dental students and to doctoral and allied health professionals, in order that they might get involved in the new Global Village. --
by Arto Demirjian, DDS, MScD, FDSRCS, New York State Dental Journal, October 1998, p. 67, 68The Global Village of Dentistry is a successful attempt to take on a daunting task: exploring the Internet and making it easy to comprehend and less intimidating for the cyber-challenged. The historical perspective and information on the evolution of the Internet and World Wide Web provide an interesting background to the immense popularity of this technical phenomenon. Explanations of modems, methods of connecting to the Internet, Internet service providers, and Internet protocols are relatively easy to understand for individuals who aren't happy with just surfing the Net, but also need to know the mechanics behind how it all works. The technical language that veteran net surfers use appears throughout the text, however, all terms are explained in the comprehensive glossary. --
by Debby Kurtz-Weidinger, RDH, MEd, American Dental Hygiene Association Journal, Vol. 72, No. 4, fall 1998, p. 12, 13The area of electronic communication is full of terminology with abbreviations that can be very confusing. The authors manage to gently introduce the reader to this terminology while also providing a separate glossary of terminology for helpful reference. ... This book does not attempt to list all the Dental Internet sites. However, it does, with excellent illustrations and examples, explain how to access some very useful Internet sites. The Internet, as these authors explain, has many uses from sources of information to research and communication. ... Having read this book the reader will have good basic skills to negotiate the Internet. It is also useful reading for those dental personnel in academic institutions who need to understand some of the jargon of computer talk so as to set up Intranets and Internet sites. ... In conclusion this book is a useful reference for dental professionals wanting a more detailed understanding of the Internet and communication worlds. --
by Dr. Otto Sparrius, Journal of the Dental Association of South Africa, September 1998 'inside back cover'Whether a novice or a seasoned "Web surfer," this book provides valuable information. The definitions (within chapters and in the glossary) of common Internet terms are a useful reminder, even to someone who uses it daily. ... Each chapter provides the reader with useful Web (URL) addresses for a variety of resources. ... The style the authors use in writing this book ... is clear and easy to read and should be well received. The book is well organized and the illustration, most of which are copies of actual Web pages, is most helpful. ...I believe that the readers of this journal would benefit from this book. However, because of the dynamic state of computers and the Internet, it will require regular (perhaps even yearly) updating to keep URL addresses current. Dental schools may find it a useful resource for their students as an introduction to the Internet, and librarians should consider adding it to their collections. --
