Sonny still one of the best,
By A Customer
This review is from: Global Warming (Audio CD)
This CD contains very good straight-ahead jazz recorded in studio sessions in January and February of 1998 when Sonny was 67 years young. One of the cuts is the Irving Berlin standard, "Change Partners"; all others are original compositions by Sonny. Playing with Sonny on all 6 cuts are Stephen Scott on piano and Bob Cranshaw on electric bass. Three cuts have Idris Muhammad on drums; the other 3 cuts have Perry Wilson on drums plus Clifton Anderson on trombone and Victor See Yuen on percussion. Both ensembles work very well together. This CD reflects the style of Sonny's 1998 touring group in that there are no long tenor improvisations which had dominated in previous years, but there are still hints of Sonny's Caribbean heritage wafting through some cuts. There are no liner notes. All in all, the music is easy to listen to and a good addition to any straight-ahead jazz CD collection.

Solid performance by Rollins & Co. on this one.,

Sonny just keeps going and going and going. This is another great CD from the master. However, pianist Stephen Scott is perhaps even more interesting to listen to on this CD, and clearly steals the show on the first track, "Island Lady". Overall, a well put together CD with some very solid grooves. Essential for fans of post-1970 Sonny.

Great New CD!,

This review is from: Global Warming (Audio CD)
This is a great new CD by Sonny Rollins. I recently say him at the Sanders Theatre in Harvard and he put on a great show. This album is focused on saving the trees with tunes like, "Global Warming", "Mother Nature's Blues and "Echo-Side Blues" Great back-up trombonist Clifton Anderson, backed up by a great rhythm section. Especially good is the re-working of the tune "Island Lady" great song.
