Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Light up your home with Globe Enersaver bulbs and save in energy costs. With a growing concern for reducing energy consumption, Globe's compact fluorescent bulbs are a must in every home. CFLs use approximately 70% less energy than incandescent bulbs and produce the same light output. One CFL bulb lasts from 8,000 to 10,000 hours or up to 10 years. This saves you money in energy costs and bulb purchases when compared to regular incandescent bulbs.

Five Tips for Buying Compact Fluorescent Bulbs

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) are energy-saving replacements for incandescent light bulbs. Below you will find information to assist you in choosing the right bulb.

How do incandescent bulbs and CFLs compare?
Incandescent bulbs produce light by passing electricity through a small wire filament, heating it until it glows. Compact fluorescent lamps use an efficient chemical reaction to produce light, which requires 66%-75% less electricity to produce the same light output as a comparable incandescent bulb. CFLs are also cooler than incandescent bulbs and last considerably longer. CFLs are available in the familiar range of styles and colors to suit different applications, including standard round, candelabra, flood, track, three-way, dimmable, indoor, and outdoor.

What are the different base types of compact fluorescent bulbs?
CFLs are available in three base types: screw base, pin base, and GU24.

  • Screw base bulbs, which have the familiar Edison screw socket, are the type used to replace existing incandescent bulbs. Simply swap out the old incandescent bulb for your new CFL and save significant energy costs.
  • Pin-base CFLs have small plastic bases with two or four pins and are designed to be used with separate ballasts mounted in fixtures designed for pin-base CFLs.
  • The GU24 socket and base system is designed to replace the Edison socket and base in energy efficient lighting fixtures to match the newest ENERGY STAR requirements. Fixtures that use GU24 bulbs are designed to avoid backward compatibility with screw base bulbs, guaranteeing higher energy efficiency.

How long do the bulbs last?
CFLs can last 8,000 to 15,000 hours depending on quality while incandescent bulbs typically last 750 to 1,000 hours.

What types of lighting can I get with CFLs?
While many people are familiar with the bluish-white flicker of a hospital hallway illuminated by old-style 48-inch fluorescent bulbs, in fact a broad range of colors are available. The common colors range from a "soft white", to a medium white to a "daylight" color that has more blue and less yellow. Additionally, a range of novelty colors are available (red, black, green, etc.) including yellow, which is ideal for outdoor lighting as it does not attract insects. For indoor lighting of living spaces, choose a cooler temperature light, while for garages or work areas use the brighter and bluer daylight CFLs which cast a wider area of illumination. If you are using a dimmable fixture, you will need to purchase a CFL specifically designed for dimming; standard CFLs do not have that function.

How do I dispose of CFLs?
Some municipalities allow for regular trash disposal while others require disposal at a hazardous waste facility, or recycling facility. Contact your local waste collection service or municipality for the policy in your area.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't be afraid to try flourescents!, April 4, 2007
This review is from: Globe 4860201 13-Watt Ultra-Mini Compact Fluorescent Spiral Bulb (60-Watt Incandescent Equivalent), Soft White, 4 Pack (Tools & Home Improvement)
I really dragged my feet about switching to these compact fluorescent bulbs, even though I knew they were an excellent choice for my budget and my striving to have a "greener" home. Having spent most of my young working life in fluorescent light, I couldn't stomach the idea of having that ghastly flickering & unnatural lighting in my own home!

But we keep several very-low-wattage lamps on in our house 24/7, and I was bothered by how often I had to replace the incandescent bulbs. Since the shades on those lamps are already slightly tinted, I figured I'd replace just those bulbs that we keep on all the time with the compact fluorescent bulbs, keeping incandescent in the lamps and ceiling fixtures that get turned off when we leave a room.

I was really surprised at the quality of the light put off by these bulbs from Amazon. It is not noticably different from the old bulbs. While I'll keep my "daylight" incandescents at the bathroom mirror and in my reading/crafting lamp (where color really counts!), I am now replacing all our other bulbs with compact fluorescent.

The only thing I'd like better would be for them to fit in all my fixtures. The regular compact bulbs fit only about half my fixtures, so I had to get the ULTRA-MINI for the rest. Unfortunately, the higher wattage are hard to find in ULTRA-MINI, so I have to keep incandescents in a few rooms where 60W-equivalent is simply too dim, but my fixture globe cannot accommodate the larger bulbs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultra-mini: size to use w/ small or medium harp (perfect for stained/underpainted glass or bedside lamps), April 3, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Globe 4860201 13-Watt Ultra-Mini Compact Fluorescent Spiral Bulb (60-Watt Incandescent Equivalent), Soft White, 4 Pack (Tools & Home Improvement)
ULTRA-MINI is the perfect size for most table & floor lamps including those with a small harp such as bedside swing-arm wall lamps. Much smaller than most Compact Fluorescent Spiral Bulbs. Works well w/ shallow Stained Glass (table) lamp shades & scounces. Has standard twisty base like Joe Average incandescent bulbs.

The 'soft white' is somewhat yellow but not obnoxiously so. Though specified as a "60 watt equivalent", I think it's on the bright side (closer to to a 75 watt than 40 watt).

The bulbs do take a minute or so to fire up to full brightness but like the reviewer for another bulb, I've learned to rather like that! I have *not* noticed a "hum" as remarked in reveiws of *other* fluorescents.

Of the 3 "four packs" (e.g. 12 bulbs) I have ordered (me & relatives), I have had one bad bulb. I am ordering more: great gift as they fit nearly all lamps & throw a lot of light!

Highly, strongly & 100% recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than I thought, March 14, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Globe 4860201 13-Watt Ultra-Mini Compact Fluorescent Spiral Bulb (60-Watt Incandescent Equivalent), Soft White, 4 Pack (Tools & Home Improvement)
I had always thought CFL (Compact Flourescent Lighbulbs) were inferior. I knew they saved money, but didn't want the ghastly light, the flickering and the long delay to turn on...what a surprise when these were non existant! The colors are warm and bright--amazingly bright, I'm looking for some lower wattage now, and there is no perceptible flickering. While they do take a second to illuminate, I'm already used to this delay--its very short. I do notice they take about 30 seconds to reach max brilliance, but theres still plenty of light when they come on. I'm getting more bulbs and different types (they come in chandalier size too!)because I love these that much! At a fraction of the wattage, reduced heat output...you can't go wrong!
